We are making our first attempt at driving to the World at the end of the month. We are from Long Island and are definitely going to stop overnight on the way down. I was just wondering if anyone has done this drive, and what might be a good place to stop about 2/3 of the way down. DD's are 4 and 12, and we have the TV/VCR thing in the minivan to help pass the time. I would appreciate any helpful hints to make this as painless as possible!!! Thanks!!

Hi
We live in Selden and have driven 6 times to WDW I would leave
LI around 2 a.m. and try and beat the traffic around Washington (worse than LI'S) I would use the I-295 around Richmond picking up I-95 around Petersburg,VA .Two area"s I recommend for a 1 night stay would be Santee,SC or Brunswick,GA. both are a easy next day drive to WDW.Please e-mail me if you need more suggestions.

We frequently stop at the Hampton Inn in Richmond Hills, GA (just south of hte Savannah exits). It is clean, staff are friendly, gas & fast food nearby, provides a continental type breakfast beginning at 6 a.m. ...Have fun!

If you can, try to drive as far as Lumberton, N.C.
There are plenty of place to stay, as well as a
great, reasonably-priced steakhouse (buffet-style)
right off of I-95. It is also near "South-of-the-Border",
which is an indication that you are getting closer to
your destination. (I think that Lumberton is actually
the officially known as the "halfway point").

Don't forget to bring plenty of munchies, water (or
light beverages, such as juice), games, etc. and make
frequent stops (on a recent news program, the
announcer urged this, not only for bathroom visits, but
it is really important to circulate the blood in your lower
body by stretching and walking to prevent blood clots
and other serious health risks).

Good luck!!

I've done this trip several times (although leaving from Manhattan).

If you get a very early start and make good time (i.e. no long stops), it's possible to reach Summerton, SC. There's nowhere very fancy to stay, but you can eat at the Summerton Diner, which I can almost guarantee you will love. Real Southern cooking at unbelievable low prices (especially to a New Yorker.)

Read my review at http://www.intrepidtraveler.com/travels/summerton.html

if you can't make it for dinner, do stop there for breakfast or lunch the next day. They are closed Thursdays.
