This will be our first driving trip to WDW. I am planning on getting some service done to my 2002 Honda Odyssey before hand. I know I am need of new shocks/struts and possibly new brakes since I haven't (to my recollection) every gotten them replaced in the 5 years we have had it. My tires are less than 2 years old, so I should get them rotated? And of course an oil change but is there anything I am missing?

We have AAA but I would rather not have any unplanned "adventures" while on the road with the family.

Also what kind of emergency roadside kit to you keep on hand for these kinds of trips?

I would pay attention to the belts and hoses and make sure the radiator and coolant are okay. When you see people by the side of the road with steam coming out from under their hood, they are having a problem in this area.

I would never consider taking a vehicle on a long trip (over a few hours) without making sure it was in as good repair as possible. This includes fixing anything currently not functioning properly that could impair the vehicle (ie. A broken antenna won't hurt you, but a worn belt could). This means taking it to a shop/dealership that will not just do the oil change but offers an inspection of common wear items.

As long as you've been following your recommended maintenance schedule, you shouldn't have any major issues to deal with before your trip. If, for some reason, you have not, I'm guessing you are well over-due for brales, belts, hoses, air filters, and probably even a set of plugs. My 2001 is just shy of 120K miles, and has had all of these done at least once.

Here's the schedule for a 2001. I think 2002 has the same schedule:

Thanks, we are up to date with maintenance and has a tune up, transmission flush, timing belt replacement and new battery last fall. I will ask our mechanic for an inspection of the hoses and other items that could be worn out. I want to err on the side of caution but I hate it when they try to mess with me cause I am a woman! I like to be prepared for what they will say before I
go. Thanks!
