We are going to drive from Indianapolis to Hilton Head for the first time this year. We are looking on our maps, and have an idea of what the route might be. Not sure though, and we would appreciate feedback about any routes that are most direct and a good drive.

It looks like the following highways are:

IN to Cincinnati on I-74
Cincinnati south to Knoxville on I-75
Spending the night in Knoxville, then
Knoxville to Asheville on ??
Head out of Asheville on I-26, to I-95 south

Are there good places to spend the night in Knoxville? How many driving hours out of Indianapolis would that be?

We are staying in Asheville for the night on our way home. We have a Concierge Collection night at the Grove Park Inn.

Thanks for any suggestions!!

We've driven it many times from Lafayette. Knoxville is 5- 6 hours from Indy (depending on a tail wind ;) ). There are lots of good spots to stay there. We usually stay in the Strawberry Hill area on I-40 on the NE side of Knoxville.

Take I-40 to Asheville and there pick up I-26 towards Columbia and I-95 to HH. It's about 13.5 hours total for us- so it's about 12.5 or less depending on where you are in Indy.

You can also go to Louisville on I-65 and pick up I-64 to Lexington and I-75. The distance is the same as I-74 thru Cincy.

Enjoy!

Do not actually drive thru Cincy, but instead take the 275 loop around. Likewise, you will not actually go into the city of Knoxville as that is out of the way. From I 75 you'll actually take the loop around, going NW and then I-40 West.

We always drive it non-stop. We're just about 1-hour less of a drive than yourself as we're in Indiana, I-75 just 20 miles from the Ohio border.

Wave as you drive by...:D

Have a great trip.

Thanks, your replies confirmed our thoughts re. the best routes to take.

We've always driven straight through from Maryland and New Jersey. Always starting out at about 10 PM to drive all night and arrive at HH in the morning. However, this is the first time we'll be driving from Indiana and we're not familiar with the route. Plus, we would like to see the country side as we go. I'm sure it's much more scenic that I-95.

We've made reservations at Knoxville on our trip down and in Asheville on the way home.
