Driving from DL to San Diego (timing ?)

We are planning on heading from the Anaheim area on a Friday to go to San Diego. We're just trying to plan what would be a good time to leave, trying to minimize traffic and maximize in park time.

We have two 3.5 year olds, so we'd like to get to the hotel in SD no later than 7:30/8, including a dinner stop. The hotel is in the inland area of San Diego, off of 163. Any thoughts?

Traffic picks up around 3 on Friday and the carpool lane only get to the edge of LA. Aim to be on the road at 2. It will get you there in plenty of time and without the headaches of stop and go.

Try to wait for dinner until you at least get to Oceanside. Del mar will be better.

Either go early (like 2:00) you should be in downtown San diego in 2 hours or less. Or wait until after dinner. It seems everyone in L.A. heads to San Diego every Friday night. My daughter lives in Oceanside and I won't go see her on Fridays anymore because unless I leave her place at 2:00 or 7:00p.m. I'm stuck in traffic all the way down to the south bay.
