what is the best route if you are driving from ct and want to stop in atlanta for a few days and then continue onto orlando.

For the leg from ATL to WDW you would take I-75 south, then the FL turnpike to WDW. It is about a 7.5 hour drive. Once you get past Atlanta the drive is pretty easy to do.

I can't say which route to go from Connecticut - Atlanta. However from Atlanta - Orlando you can take I-75 - Florida Turnpike 91 - State Road 429 Southbound Western Expressway, then from there take Exit 8 to Walt Disney World.

Depending on where you are here in CT and what time you are planning on leaving, I would avoid 95 through CT and NY. When we drive south we take 84 to 684 to the Sawmill, over the Tappan Zee and down the Garden State until we can pick up 95 farther down. We tried 95 all the way once and even on the weekend it was a mess and the bridge tolls are more expensive. If you don't have one, get and EZ pass. They are the greatest thing and will save you time at all the toll plazas in NY, NJ, Delaware bridge, etc. Won't work in Florida though.

From CT, I would say 2 options to Atlanta:
1 - 95 South to Richmond, VA, 85 to Durham, NC (where 85 joins 40), then stay 85 through Charlotte, NC to Atlanta.
2 - Tappanzee Bridge to 287 South to 78 West to 81 South. Then 77 South through VA to Charlotte, NC, picking up 85 to Atlanta. Total tolls that route @ $2 (at the NJ/PA line).

I live in the NE corner of CT (Quiet Corner) and we strongly prefer taking 84 to 81 and perhaps swinging south to 95 AFTER the DC area. We have used 64, and sometimes stay on 81 all the way to NC and take 77 and then 26 to 95. This route is more scenic and avoids the megalopolis of the east. We have been stuck in DC traffic at 3 am and that colors our view.

HTH If you have AAA you can get maps and a trip ticket from them, too.

I agree w/francie and always take the Tappan Zee to the Garden State when driving south. One more option, if the Jersey Turnpike is a parking lot, that I have used is to take Rte 130 either right off the Garden State or any exit on the Pike. It's a few miles west of 95 and is a divided highway. Yes, there are traffic lights but can still be much faster when NJTP is jammed and you can take it just about all the way to the Del Mem bridge. We found this route on a return trip to CT from Baltimore. Flashing sign on the Pike listed a backup of 15 miles at exit 6. We got off Exit 4 & breezed up Rt 130 saving a great deal of time!!!
