We have 2 preschool boys, a minivan with dvd, and a small budget. we do not want to pay $800-1000 in airfare, so we want to drive to orlando from the chicago area.

has anyone made a similar trip? due to my dh's work hours, we cannot leave chicago until a friday evening at 7:30 pm the earliest. we need to be in valdosta saturday night. we thought about stopping in either indianapolis (3.5 hrs from us) or seymour, IN (4.5 hrs from us), and that would leave us 11-12 hrs to drive on sat. Is this do-able? should we just have the kids sleep in the car and drive through the night from chicago to valdosta?

any input is appreciated!

I haven't done the drive in a number of years but the entier drive from the Chicago area to WDW is only about 20 hours so you should have no problems at all being in Valdosta by Saturday night especially if you drive straight through (assuming you can do that).

You might also want to look into taking I57 vs. I65 through Illinois, there's less traffic on the road and you don't have any major cities to hit until you get to Nashville. Not knowing where you're starting from you should he able to make either Effinham or Mt. Vernon in the 3.5 to 4.5 range, maybe even Marion if you push it a bit. Just south of Marion you catch I24 which you take to Nashvillem, where you'd get in I24 anyway to get to I75.

Good luck.

We've done it a few times from the Detroit Michigan area. Being that you are leaving after your husband gets off work, he's going to be tired and probably not up for driving all the way through to Georgia. We've done it and it's really hard, even with the kids sleeping.

So, my suggestion is get in 5 to 7 hours the first night and do your long drive the next day. We usually get to Valdosta area the second day and spend the night there and then the 3rd day it seems like nothing to get to Orlando and we still have most of the day to enjoy.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

If you can handle it, try driving thru the night while the kids are sleeping, would arrive in Valdosta bu lunch on Saturday..
