sometimes you have to be careful with traffic lights ..... their lights are overhead and I've heard of people stopping directly under some lights only to find they're slap bang in the middle of the intersection!!!

DOH! Like here I would concentrate on the line on the road not what's twenty ft above your head!
Seriously, we booked our trip this time last year adamant that we weren't going to drive (3adults 2 under 5's), what were we thinking? Two weeks before leaving I said to DH it could make or break the trip (or us!) and we went for a 7 seater at the last moment. We never looked back.
Apart from the journey on arrival I did all the driving for the whole two weeks (I drive more here as I'm at home with the children). It was easy, you get lots of time to make decisions, the speed limits are really sensibile, the right turn on red (unless signed otherwise) is fab and really keeps traffic flowing. They can and do overtake on both sides so I stuck to the middle lane as to not p anybody off, tolls are easy just keep change to hand, tuck your left foot under your chair and you'll have no problems. Take notice of the "ramp" (turnoff) speed limit signs and adhere to them, go too fast and that can been one hell of a skid (as I found out)
Sat nav - I used tom tom on my PDA (MDA Vario II) and a little GPS reciever, it was great but it takes a while to find a satalite when you turn it on in a new country. I turned it on the minute we got off the plane and it kicked in the minute we got to the hotel - and I'm told that's quick. Just a little warning. Apart from that it worked well.
Honestly, we felt like you - no need
