Hi there,

Many of you will have thought there is that crazy Brit again, asking dumb questions or Doc will pull the thread(more likely) and yes he did twice, pulled from the DVC board.

I need big lot of help, I will be serving at Nellis AFB, Nevada and then at Davis Monthan AFB, AZ. I finish my tour by sending all the other airmen back to Scotland, but I have decided to travel across southern America in a car and collect my family from Orlando airport. At this point I have to make clear that my wife wants me travel home to Scotland from the States then 5 days later return. No way, this is a chance of a lifetime.

Please suggest routes and sights to see, the only thing I want do is visit Dallas (I like the Cowboys, since 1983) and visit Dealy Plaza. I love to sight see.

Suggestions please.

Please don't post if you wish try and sympathize with my wife, its only 500 miles drive for her, sure she can find the airport.

What kinds of things are you interested in, other than the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders...I mean, football team?

You are going to see plenty of desert the first part of your trip, but you are already used to that by now. There are several very interesting National Parks/Monuments nearby your likely route (I-10) For info on those go to www.nps.gov and look up the individual park. Their website is not the most user-friendly in the world, but click on the "In Depth" button for most parks and you'll get a lot of good info.

In addition to Dallas, N'awlins (New Orleans) is an obvious stop.

It really depends on what you want to see, what you've already seen, what your interests are, and how much time you have.

Hi there,

I am interested in History,Geography and any places of interest eg. things I wouldn't want to miss for the sake of 60 miles. Like the birth place of Elvis or the plaza where they shot JFK or the Rio Grande. I should have been an explorer, I love navigating new territories and generally meeting folks.

We live in a suburb just north of Dallas. When will you be coming through Dallas? I can look up to see what things are going on in Dallas while your here and let you know. You might like the Fort Worth stockyards. Are you interested in seeing a rodeo. I can look up that info for you as well.

Hi there,

I will hopefully be passing through about the first couple of days of Oct 05.

Any info would be gratefully appreciated.

If you travel I-20 into Mississippi, I would hit the Vicksburg battlefield park. It's a very large drive-through park. If you are interested in the Civil War it's very interesting. If you're not interested in the Civil War, it will be boring to you. In the park they also have an ironclad that was raised from the bottom of the river (the "Cairo") and a museum. You can walk around on the Cairo. Many of the seige trenches are still clearly visible around the park. Here is its website:

Louisiana also has a nice assortment of antebellum plantation homes along the route from Shreveport through Baton Rouge and east along I-10. One of the most heavily filmed and photographed homes is located not far from I-10 between Baton Rouge and New Orleans (Oak Alley Plantation). A link to its website is below:

Hope this helps a little!

Hi there,

Which is the Best Route from Tucson to Orlando, via Dallas and New Orleans, or any other place of interest. Any suggestions.

I'm not sure if you have decided on your route for sure but I see you mentioned the birthplace of Elvis, which is Tupelo, MS. If you are in that vicinity and are interested in another Elvis landmark, go to Graceland, his home in Memphis, TN. (107 miles from Tupelo). You take a self-guided tour so you can spend as much time as you like in each area. Before you begin, you get an audio headset that describes what you are seeing. You start it & stop it as you get to each point of interest. An all inclusive ticket gets you into the mansion & grounds (you also see the burial plots of Elvis, both his parents, & his grandmother), the museum, and a tour of his private jet. If you are a AAA member, you get a discount off the $27.00 ticket price.

Stevie,

While you're at Nellis and/or Davis-Monthan, be sure to visit the Information, Tickets & Tours office (ITT) at each base, and they should be able to give you some handouts. Also, you can try the Family Support Center as well. In the areas where there are bases nearby, they might be able to give you more info.

HTH!

Just past where I-20 branches off of I-10 is Pecos , Texas ~ Home of the Worlds first Rodeo. There is a great museum with lots of old West things.

Just a short 100 miles North of Pecos is the Carlsbad Caverns in Carlsbad, New Mexico. To me that is worth a drive to see.

Also when you go on I-10 you will go through El Paso , Tx and you can go downtown and see all kinds of things. Ft Bliss (Army base) is located in El Paso

You could go from El Paso to Carlsbad then down to Pecos and be on I-20.

I hope this helps you a little on your trip! Brenda

********forgot to add that you should follow I-10 until you get to Kent, Texas then go to I-20 so you can go to Dallas. If you stay on I-10 to Orlando you will miss Dallas. At Shreveport, Louisinana you can go down I-49 and get back on I-10 again. Or if you want to go to Memphis, Tennessee you have to take I-30 (out of Dallas) to I-40 into Memphis and then down from there. I don't know if you realize that it will take a whole day or more just to drive across Texas. I hope you have a lot of time to drive and sight see because it's going to be a long trip!***********
