Driving & avoiding Daytona

I need some help. We'll be driving into Florida on 2/19, now realize it is the day of the 500. I've been searching for alternate routes, trying to avoid that area at all costs. Good idea?

I read that taking 10 in Jacksonville to 75 would be a good alternate. Then what, do we take the Florida Turnpike? Where would we go from there?

One last question...about how much longer from Jacksonville would this route be then taking the usual 95 to I4?

Thanks for any advice, the more detailed directions the better. I'd hate to start our vacation wasting time being lost.

Unless you go by the exit for the track, right after the race ends, or say 2 hour window b4 start...you shouldn't have a problem. (however, the track exit is just north of 4)

I made the mistake to hit that exit 30 min after race ended on a north bound leg...Even at that, the backup was small as compared to my daily commute in the SanFran Bay Area!

But, yes 10 to 75 - to Leesburg, then the turnpike will take you to Orlando and you can pick up 4... some say it is faster!

I've also been trying to decide on an alternate route to avoid Daytona. I was looking at a map of Fla and was contemplating 10 to 75, but I see 301 cuts down from 10 to 75 and might save some time. Does anyone know if this is so, or is it not a desirable route? So my thinking is 95 to 295 to 10 to 301 to 75 to Fla Tpke to 4. Any feedback is appreciated :goodvibes

Don't take 301!!!!!! It took us FOREVER last year. We wanted to avoid Daytona on Pres. weekend, so we stopped at the Welcome center and asked about the traffic on 95. They advised us to avoid it, and pointed out a few alternative routes. We took 301, it was fine at first. 55mph through horse farms...it was really pretty. After Gainsville it's 55mph, stop light, stop light, stop light......55mph, stop light, stop light, stop light...etc. And not to mention the speed traps thrown in for fun. It was over 2 hours on a road like 192, not as much traffic, but the lights were terrible. I cried with joy when we finally got to the turnpike. I do have to say we thought Cleremont was beautiful, and in hindsight, I liked seeing the scenery.

Thanks for the heads up :dumbo: I guess we'll just stick with 10 to 75 to the Tpke....glad I asked :cheer2:
