We're back and our vacation was absolutely, totally and completely WONDERFUL!!! Except for some rather hilarious exploits.

Our quick background: Our family of three decided that WDW should be our first family vacation in 2002 when my wife (Robin DW43) and I (Steve DH42) decided to road trip to Florida with our DD (Lauren, then DD5, now DD11). It was such a magical experience that we repeated it again in 2003 to see all the things we had missed. In 2004, we made the same trip, but we took in Universal, Sea World, and Discovery Cove. They were great in their own ways, but in 2005 and 2006, we again returned to WDW since we had fallen in love with it. In 2007, my DW obtained her Masters Degree so we couldn't go on vacation (too much time at school for her). So 2008 was to be a WDW trip worth remembering because we hadn't been there for two years and we had time to make up for!!!

On our last trip, we had our 1995 Ford Windstar minivan with its third row seat removed. The trip from Northern Illinois was never a problem when it came to holding our luggage and keeping us comfy. We now have a 2007 Mercury Mariner (sister small SUV to the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute). I had the oil changed and I washed/waxed/vacuumed/Armor Alled the little truck for our trip. We bought a $199 XCargo roof luggage carrier from Sears and I test fitted it a few days before our trip. We needed the extra space because we bring a large, wheeled, RubberMaid cooler full of Coke Zero, Fanta Orange Zero, Minute Maid Light lemonade, Diet Mountain Dew Code Red and Diet Mountain Dew. We all love these beverages and the 24 oz resealable bottles go along way to saving money on drinks during our trip.

I was amazed at how well the roof luggage storage worked. It was virtually silent during the whole drive time. No wind noise due to its aerodynamic design. I'm glad we bought the one we did. It opens from the rear with its key lock. I had no problem reaching the soft side luggage we use (three bags) due to my 6'4" height and the fact that I even parked next to a curb each time to make it even easier. We had a ton of room in the back of our Mariner for everything else...we even had room to spare.

So with Mickey and Minnie on the back of our roof (I epoxied magnets into holes I drilled in these Happy Meal rubber toys to hold them on the roof), a Mickey antenna topper, and a Tinkerbell license plate frame to let everyone know where we were headed, we hit the road!

aWDW2008003.jpg

Our rules are simple. When anyone needs to stop, we stop. But it seemed that we were always ready at the same time to stretch our legs, fuel up the Mariner, grab a snack and use the washroom at the same time. We left our home at 4:15 in the morning. We stopped at a Best Western of I-75, just south of Atlanta at around 6:00 pm. We had dinner at a Fuddruckers and swam in the hotel's indoor pool. It was very relaxing and recharged our batteries.

I'll list some numbers here for those interested. Our total gasoline expenditures were $458.14 round trip (which includes driving to Vero Beach). Our cost for the one night hotel was $100, so that totals at $558.14...which is much, much less expensive than what today's cost for round trip airfare would have been for all three of us from O'Hare to Orlando. We would have to add in a rental car for travelling from WDW to Vero Beach and back to the airport too.

The next morning, we were on the road by 6:00 am. We always stop for photos and our free shot glass of orange juice at the Florida Welcome Center!

aWDW2008012.jpg

We never saw a drop of rain during our drive down to Florida. It was uneventful. It is amazing how easy the drive is when the speed limit is 70 mph. Our DD11, Lauren had a DVD player but didn't use it at all. She loves to read and I took her to a local used bookstore where she picked out a bunch of stuff she thought she'd like. I had to ask her to look up when we crossed into Kentucky (over the Ohio river on the huge bridge) and into Tennessee and into Georgia and back into Tennessee and then back into Georgia (that crazy I-24) and through the gorgeous Smokey Mountains.

The new 429 highway branches off the Florida Turnpike and pulls you right up at the "back" of WDW. Instead of taking 4, this new road doesn't let you see Orlando or any of the other attractions in the city. You just appear at Walt Disney World. I wonder what it cost for Disney to subsidize that tollway?

We had no wait on a Monday at around 1:30 pm to check into the Coronado Springs Resort. This was our first repeat stay at a resort and we loved teh Coronado Springs!!! Everything went smooth except for our Disney VISA card not being accepted (yikes!). I figured out that I had booked this vacation last year and had since received a new card, with a new expiration date, and they were still using the old card's expiration date to check us in. Once I noted that, everything was great. We had a list of our ADR's printed out by concierge and got our Hoop Dee Doo Revue tickets as well.

aWDW2008016.jpg

Our room was a waterview on the AAA discount for room only. It was ready and we unloaded our stuff. We were very happy that the room was on the first floor and had a quiet and amazingly beautiful view from out door/window. Here's the view:

aWDW2008123.jpg

Here's a couple more Coronado Springs Resort pics. We love the theming and the colors. The lake is stunning in the morning and at night!

aWDW2008121.jpg

aWDW2008115.jpg

We had bought 7 Day Park Hopper Tickets from www.floridaorlandotickets.net so we decided to go to Animal Kingdom since we had arrived so early on our second day of vacation. It was EMH at AK and we figured we'd stay late. We saw the parade, and went on the Kilamanjaro Safari.

aWDW2008040.jpg

aWDW2008034.jpg

We took the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch and met Jimminy Cricket and Pocahontas.

aWDW2008047.jpg

We had dinner at the Pizza Safari and then after 8pm, during EMH, we laughed ourselves silly at It's Tough To Be A Bug and scared ourselves silly on Dinosaur and Expedition Everest. The only thing we didn't get to do was see the new Finding Nemo show. While DW and DD11 went on the Primeval Whirl (not for me, the only ride I won't go on, those twists and turns kill me!), I had a Mickey Ice Cream bar. When I went to pay, the Cast Member said, "This is a magical moment for sir, you ice cream is free!" Yeah! That was our one and only magical moment. It was a nice little treat! We also saw Festival of the Lion King at night when it was rather cool out. Boy is that show fantastic!!!

Our second Park day was at MK for Early Entry EMH.
aWDW2008067.jpg

We rode Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear's space ranger spin, saw the hilarious and very well done Monsters Inc Laugh Floor, the Carousel of Progress (an old time fav) all before breakfast at Cinderella's Royal Table. CRT was great as always.

aWDW2008074.jpg

We went on POTC after our late breakfast and then we had just a bit of rain. It was enough to make us not go on the Jungle Cruise (closed down) and by ponchos (which we barely used).

aWDW2008084.jpg

We headed back to our room and swam in the Dig Site pool. Then we dressed for dinner and bussed to MK so we could ferry to Fort Wilderness for the Hoop Dee Doo. It had been 6 years since the HDD.

aWDW2008101.jpg

Our DD11 laughed herself out of breath at this dinner show. Everyone needs to see the HDD at least once. It was great!

aWDW2008104.jpg

On our ferry ride back to MK, we got to see the Electric Light Water Parade. We'd never seen it before so it was an extra treat. I would recommend the 7:15 HDD so that you might get to see this nighttime water float on your way back to the MK docks.

(more coming)

We're from Chicagoland, and we drove on our February trip...

I can't wait to read more (the Vero Beach part really caught my attention!).

:cool1:

Our next morning, we slept in. We had an ADR for the Tusker House at AK but we missed it. Instead, we went to the Dig Site for their 10 am ritual. The lifeguards gather all the kids at the base of the pyramid and get them chanting, "Water! Water! Water!" until the water finally begins to cascade down the steps from the top. It was very fun!

aWDW2008112.jpg

We had lunch at the Pepper Market and strolled around our resort a bit. It is beyond gorgeous. We love the style and theming and colors. The grounds are so lush with vegetation and so well manicured.

We headed over to Disney Hollywood Studios since there were EMH's that night. Lauren loved the High School Musical 2 production under the giant Mickey Sorcerer Hat:

aWDW2008129.jpg

We MUST go on the Great Movie Ride because we all adore it. Many people miss this attraction. We love everything about it! We walked through the Journey into Narnia and got to meet Prince Caspian. I kept on eye on this rogue around my wife (those English accents, ya know!):

aWDW2008138.jpg

FastPasses for Toy Story Midway Mania were all gone. We went on Star Tours and laughed ourselves silly at the Muppetvision 3D show. Dinner was at the Hollywood & Vine buffet (great, as usual) since we had signed up in advance for the Fantasmic dinner package. I ordered a chocolate milk and drank half of it quickly. Then I filled the glass with soft serve vanilla ice cream (chocolate makes it too chocolately!) so that I had a yummy milk shake with my meal. Several other patrons took my lead and did the same thing! After dinner we watched the "public works" guys right outside the diner. Geez, those three guys were funny! Fantasmic is a must see if you haven't enjoyed it already. Wow, what a show! There were some changes compared to two years ago that we really enjoyed. Then it was time for EMH and we screamed on the Tower of Terror and thrilled to the Rockin Roller Coaster. I did notice that the lines during the nighttime EMH's are much, much bigger than the ones in the morning. The teenagers can stay up late, but they can't get up early. If you want to really cut down on your wait times, get to the parks early!

We absolutely loved Toy Story Midway Mania! The theming in the line was very nostalgic and the ride itself is beyond description. I wanted to go on it again and again!

aWDW2008145.jpg

aWDW2008169.jpg

Our next day was at Epcot and we went with the opening crowd to get a FastPass for Soarin'. We rode The Seas with Nemo and Friends. It's a ride similar in style to Peter Pan's Flight or Winnie the Pooh. The technical aspect of projecting Nemo and his friends into the actual aquarium with real fish is very slick. The ride is no big deal, but it's fun and should be a blast for little kids. We enjoyed it. Lauren got to ask Crush what kind of food turtles eat during Turtle Talk. Again, an amazing feat of engineering and magic! We had an ADR at the Coral Reef for lunch. We bought Lauren a Pirate cup of raspberry lemonade with a lightup Tinkerbell on the straw. She loved it!

aWDW2008180.jpg

There was just a little bit of rain and we wore our ponchos for about 5 minutes, the only time we needed them the whole trip! We rode Test Track and Living with the Land and we saw Honey I Shrunk the Audience. We went on the boat ride through Mexico and toured all of the countries in the World Showcase. Then it was back to the CSR to get a jump on some sleep.

We were at MK the next morning when they opened with their big show at 9 am. We did a whole bunch of rides and attractions with no lines at all.

aWDW2008221.jpg

Then we hopped the ferryboat to the Transportation area and took a bus over to DHS again. We saw the Green Army guys do a little parachute show that was hysterical and we had lunch at the Sci Fi Dine In. This is one of the places we had never been. Boy, was it terrific! What a great experience. The food was great too. Just like the outside drive ins I remember as a kid. Lauren traded pins for the first time with the guy who checked us in:

aWDW2008250.jpg

We had a great time!

aWDW2008253.jpg

We decided to go to Downtown Disney at night and have dinner at Fulton's Crab House. We've done this every year because we all love seafood and Fulton's is excellent. So is their service. The crab/lobster bisque was out of this world!

aWDW2008264.jpg

We shopped and Lauren got a hair wrap with colored threads and beads!

aWDW2008259.jpg

aWDW2008260.jpg

Day 6, we got up and hit Typhoon Lagoon at 9am, when they opened. We love this waterpark. The lazy river is so long and easy going. I revile in the real palm trees and colorful flowers all along its edges. We really like Shark Reef. We all went snorkeling through it and I went a second time.

aWDW2008386.jpg

The wave pool with its huge, single wave is a ton of fun. We cannot stop laughing (I know, it's terrible) at the people who just stroll in, not knowing that the big wave is coming. We always see so many people get bowled over, with their feet over their heads. They lose their hats and sunglasses and get scraped and bruised. Little kids cry in panic and fear. It's not funny at all. But, then again, it is. If you go, please be careful. The wave is alot of fun if you know what you're doing. Just don't get hurt.

aWDW2008.jpg

We always get temporary tattoos at TL. We went back to the CSR and freshened up with showers so that we would look nice for our dinner at Chef Mickey's.

aWDW2008273.jpg

aWDW2008274.jpg

We hopped a bus (Did I mention that we NEVER waited more than 5 minutes for a bus the entire trip? Most of the time it was more like 1-2 minutes!) to MK and then hopped the monorail into The Contemporary Resort (like Walt wanted us to).

aWDW2008286.jpg

The buffet was great like it always is. I had about 50 peel and eat shrimp. Mmmmmmm! Great cocktail sauce too!

There is another thing that never gets old at WDW! Next to us was a little girl, under the age of two. She was having a blast with her big family while seated in her high chair. But when Mickey or Goofy or Donald or Minnie came buy, she would cry hysterically and bury her face in the table. Her family could not stop laughing and neither could we. It's so darn funny when little kids are scared out of their minds by the characters. I know, I know, it's not really funny. But, then again, it really is! Her own family was in hysterics!!!!

We just smiled with Mickey and I told him what a fine establishment he had. He shook my hand!
aWDW2008283.jpg

The next day we hit MK at 9 am again.

aWDW2008323.jpg

We went on Space Mountain again and we rode the Indy Speedway cars.

aWDW2008312.jpg

We went on Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin again, rode the Mad Tea Party cups, Goofy's Barnstormer roller coaster (fun and mild) and we saw the Castle stage show. Lauren wanted to see the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor again so we did it a second time. There were several changes from the first time so you can expect it to be different enough a second time around.

We went through the Haunted Mansion, the Hall of Presidents (always makes me cry) and saw the Family Parade. We also rode the Liberty Belle steam engine paddle wheel boat. I hadn't been on it since I was with my parents 30+ years ago. Don't miss it! I forgot how wonderful it is!!!

aWDW2008328.jpg

aWDW2008339.jpg

We went back to the CSR for some relaxation time. We decided to rental kayaks on the lake. I wanted for all three of us to get separate kayaks. Lauren has been in one at Bass Pro Shops in a pool in their parking lot before, but that's it. I wanted her to at least be by herself so she could say she did it. She was very excited. They only had two, one person kayaks and one, two person kayak. We got set with life jackets and then the guy running the marina said, "Oh, go ahead and take all three and I'll just charge you for the two."

So, (are you paying attention, this gets good!) Robin and Lauren went out in single person kayaks. I went out in the double kayak, seated in the rear seat. Everything seemed fine.

Here's a picture (from the disposable underwater camera we brought with us) of Lauren, taken by me from my kayak...the two person kayak, occupied in the rear seat by me only)....

aWDW2008387.jpg

As I paddled around and we were all having a wonderful time, with people on the shore sidewalks watching us in jealously, I seemed to not be able to keep my balance. It was a very weird sensation. I was doing fine and then all of a sudden, I was rocking side to side. Then I was flipped and I was swimming. My kayak had filled up with water because a hole in the rear handle had been submerged. Two people are supposed to be in it to keep it afloat, not one. The rescue boat had to come over and get me out of the water and tow my kayak in! Geez! We all could not stop laughing. It was a very funny situation.

So here's me in the water with my lovely DW and DD11 laughing so hard that they may fall off their kayaks.
aWDW2008388.jpg

Robin loved to say later how serious the guy in the safety boat looked, rushing to my aid. I was fine. He did help me into the boat because the goofy life jacket was more of a hinderence than an aid.

Lest anyone ever tell you that there are no actual alligators in the lakes at Walt Disney World, let this photo be proof that there are:

aWDW2008389.jpg

He doesn't look very big, but he was around 2 1/2' and he was right there in the water with me. The only thing that makes you nervous is wondering where his mom and dad are lurking. Anyway, other than my bruised ego (which was battered the remainder of the trip by my DW and DD11 who found hours upon hours of hilarity repeating their versions of the "kayak incident"), all was well.

We had dinner at the Pepper Market again and swam in the quiet pool and I did some laundry. Lauren also found a love for the hammocks around the CSR.

aWDW2008344.jpg

We packed the next morning and hung out in the Dig Site pool until noon. Then we hit the road again, waving goodbye to WDW and saying hello two hours later to Disney's Vero Beach Resort! When we pulled into the entrance, the security guard said, "Welcome Home!" What a nice feeling!

aWDW2008353.jpg

Vero Beach is an old world style, Florida resort, built like they were 100 years ago. It's very relaxed and all we really do is play in the ocean and then play in the pool. Some days, we switch it up and play in the pool first and then play in the ocean. The Atlantic was 80+ degrees each day. It never rained. The outside temperature was around 89 each day. Gorgeous.

aWDW2008382.jpg

aWDW2008360.jpg

We went to the bonfire at night and roasted s'mores and sang silly songs.

aWDW2008348.jpg

We had dinner one night at Shutters, one of the resort's two restaurants. We also had a character breakfast with Donald and Goofy.

aWDW2008372.jpg

aWDW2008374.jpg

We drove to the Publix grocery store our first morning and bought bread and sandwich meat and cheese and chips to have lunch by the pool or on the beach.

We ate dinner one night at Captain Hiram's which is about 15 minutes north in Sebastian. It's right on the water and very "Floridian." We love their food (fried lobster balls for an appetizer, crab stuffed shrimp for dinner, and peanut butter cup cheesecake for dessert) and seeing the boats come in after a day fishing. They put their fish up for display right there on the dock. I saw some movement in the water and we ran out on the dock before our food arrived. We saw a manatee in the wild for the first time!

aWDW2008366.jpg

I can't say enough about Vero Beach. The room we always get is an Inn Ocean View with a balcony. It has two queen sized beds, a fridge, microwave, toaster, wet bar, plates, bowls, spoons, knives, forks, etc. There are a ton of things for kids to do all day long. It is a turtle nesting area and there is lots to learn about that. You can rent jet skis, sailboats, boogie boards (we just buy one at the local Walgreens), all kinds of stuff. They have mini-golf right there, archery, shuffleboard, board games (we played Pirates of the Caribbean Life one evening), fishing, you name it, they got it. All with the typical Disney flair and towel gators and sting rays in your room with Mickey soaps.

We made a sand dolphin this year. We've made turtles, and sharks and even a Mickey once.

aWDW2008359.jpg

It was hard to leave. Lauren didn't want to get out of the ocean, she loved playing in the waves and collecting shells to bring home to her friends. We got three Disney Vero Beach pressed pennies and she is making little craft boxes of sand and shells and the pennies for her friends.

At night, they close the beach for the turtle nesting so this was our final shot of Lauren with her feet in the Atlantic Ocean:

aWDW2008380.jpg

We left on Thursday at 4:15 in the morning. We usually stop in Tennessee or Kentucky for the night, but I was afraid of northbound Chicago traffic on a Friday going up to Wisconsin. It can be a nightmare. We decided to drive straight through for the first time in six trips. 21 hours it took us. But we made it no problem. We pulled into our driveway at 12:30 am. Our dog was very, very happy to see us. We had been gone 12 days. We were happy to see him too!

We had a virtually perfect trip. Everything was wonderful, from the weather to the lack of traffic, to the fun. We enjoyed being veterans of WDW. We were never in a hurry. We took our time. A 7 night vacation allows you to be able to say, "we'll come back another day and ride that attraction."

The best advice I can give anyone, whether it's their first trip or their sixth, is to stop and smell the flowers. Notice how clean everything is at Disney. How new everything looks, even though it's not new. The attention to detail and the theming is meticulous. Stop and smell the flowers. They smell really good. I think it's the mid afternoon rain that causes it....
;)

I enjoyed your trip report! Great writing, great pictures! You have a beautiful family!

:wizard:

So glad to find and read your report. I love when I find another CSR lover. We will be there in 24 days to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary (our seventh stay at CSR) and we can't wait. Sounds like you had a terrific vacation.

We do like the CSR alot! Walking the resort at night is a real treat. The fountains are gorgeous when they're lit up at night. The kayak/alligator story is getting lots of play now that we're back home. Both Lauren and Robin are having fun telling it to friends, family, and neighbors!!

I wish I was back at Disney's Vero Beach Resort, floating in the gentle ocean waves....:goodvibes
