Driving 6000 Miles for the Magic: A Miracle Trip

Great installment! It seems like you got a lot done on MK day, despite the 3 hour lunch. I'm with you, though; I would have been doing a lot of deep calming breaths to keep the commando from screaming out! Thanks for the tip about the Disser who listed all the bathrooms in the parks--I'll have to do a thread search for that one!

I'm looking forward to hearing about Spectro and Wishes--we haven't seen either one yet!

Great TR so far. I can't even imagine trying to do all you guys have done with all you go through. It's truly amazing and your dad is an amazing man doing all he does.

My DH has Spina Bifida and is confined to a wheelchair, but thankfully he can transfer to a bed himself and he drives/works, etc. He has a colostomy and possibly soon a urostomy (I think that's right) to take care of his personal needs.

We have been to Disney together twice and this November will be our 3rd time and we can't wait. You are absolutely right...Disney is so great with all its accessibility. There are a few rides/attractions that I wish were a bit more accessible, but overall we love it.

I can't wait to hear more about your trip!

I just found your trip report today, and spent my entire lunch hour reading it!! I can't wait for another installment! Great Pictures! Keep them coming!:goodvibes

ext we headed off to Stitch. Stitch was a new attraction for our family. The CM kindly told us that he didn’t think that electric wheelchairs could fit on the ride but he would check with his supervisor. She came out and explained that the harness that pulls down isn’t compatible with electric wheelchairs because of the batteries, back, and (in my case) headrest. Okey dokey. I wasn’t upset because they responded so graciously and I wasn’t that interested to begin with.

Honey, you did not miss a thing. I was so excited that there was a new venue and I was so unexcited when I came out of it:sad2: . The former attraction, "Alien", was soooo much better.

Another great day Christamae, 3 hours for lunch though :faint: no wonder you were raring to go! Great choice with the pin it's really cute. I love how you laugh about losing your family I think I'd have got cross :rotfl2: Can't wait until Wednesday popcorn::

another great installment. a little long on lunch. i can't tell you how many times i see families get seperated because someone just stops for a second to snap a picture. :rotfl: can't wait to read your next installment.

sounds like a good time. I always thought the bathrooms were mostly for mothers changing boys or fathers changing daughters... I figured they were helpful for handicapped too.... .but putting a baby to sleep... never thought of that lol... isn't that what the baby care centers are for.....

Loving your trip report so far. Can't wait for the next installment

I have to confess that late one night after Illuminations...I had to use the companion bathroom!

The thing is, after a trip to Asia, I got this 'explosive' diarrhea thing. For some reason, it became a real issue that particular trip to DIsney. I had no more than 30 secs after I felt the 'urge' to get myself to a throne. So...I was running at high speed and there was a line of women at the regular one and I saw someone leaving the companion room and had no choice...RELIEF!
Luckily there was no one waiting when I came out. I wasn't so lucky a few nights before at MK. (the bathrooms are hard to find there)...I couldn't make it and ended up trowing away some clothing!!!! Well, this is way too much info, but I can't believe that people use those bathrooms for anything other than an emergency! You were so patient and so nice to some really rude peple.

We should swap stories sometime!!! :lmao:

Wow, I just found and read your whole report and just have to say that I think you have the most amazing attitude. Your cheerfulness and patience just is so evident in your writing. Your Dad is a saint and just amazing. I am in awe of how much it takes for you to get your day going. Like others have said never again will I complain about packing up the kids backpacks. I can't wait to read the rest of your amazing adventure!

Allyson

Another great installment! I'm really enjoying your trip report and absolutely love all the pictures!

I am enjoying your TR!

As far as the bathroom situation...

we were there for lunch at CRT in 2005. My girls did not wear the dresses all day, it was 100 degrees but they did want to change before lunch. I think I remember using this bathroom as a place for my girls to change. Had there been a sign there (and if there was please forgive me) saying that it was only handicapped accessible, we would not have used it. There are no dressing rooms at CRT and as I recall...the regular restrooms are up a flight of stairs and you cannot be up there until you are called up there....I propose they put some sort of dressing room there at CRT for these situations because there were a lot of families dressing up there when we were there.

Either way...my little girls don't dres up anymore....they say they are getting too old for that....:sad2:

I am really loving the TR and really learning a lot from your experience

thanks again for sharing:cheer2:

Thanks for the great trip report. Your writing style makes me feel like I am there with you guys!

I got sworn at by people saying "Because of you, my DD won't be able to have her picture taken with her princess dress on."

Wow. WOW. I guess I can see the restroom being mistaken for a great place to transform little tourist girls into princesses princess: (and disfan has a GREAT idea/solution for that!) but I am FLOORED that somebody would look into the eyes of a family with special needs and actually say that. I'm nauseous now.

Back to Christamae. Great chapter. I remain in awe of your attitude. I would be soooo chomping at the bit after a 3 hour lunch/potty break. Can't wait to hear more .... I know what "on this magic night" means!! My fave.

Thank you for all the replies and everyone joining! :cool1:

nts4wdw & dismom9761: Thanks! All I gotta say is Philharmagic=:goodvibes

CatStarr: Thanks-I do love the commando but my family doesn't. Gotta keep the troops happy ;) My current pin Holy Grail is:
pin48223

SueM in MN: Yikes! That sounds awful. Our best companion bathroom was the one between Space Mountain and Carousel of Progress.

Goofyluver: We got several more pins. On the first MGM day you will see an addition around my neck. Cast Members were awesome with pins! Since I have been home, I have continued trading with dizpins.com and have 42 pins.

Our2Girls&Disney: Thanks for continuing this journey and your understanding of special needs.

whogirl'smom: Thanks. This MK day was our most productive despite the three hour lunch. :scared1: You haven't seen Spectromagic and Wishes!! You must see them!!

allietoyou: Thanks for joining and the compliments and introducing your DH :wave2: Disney World is the best with accessibility-keeps us coming.

Kimberley815: Thanks! I hope you enjoy the rest :dance3: Cool avatar

tpayne: We mostly wanted to try Stitch because it was wheelchair accessible... They should've invested in a Horizons ride and made it wheelchair accessible. I miss Horizons...

DisneyJo: I was trying not to:furious: but reminded myself that I was at the happiest place on earth and "there's always tomorrow... "

burly: Mom listened to my lunch advise after that...We had more problems with separating that weren't dealt with as happily...

Tanya90210 and hrsmom: Thanks for following and posting! I love reading all my posts.

kidsister: That's a nasty situation and definitely a no other option story. I hope all your Disney trips don't cause diarrhea  that would be a horrible side effect! And thanks for your kind comments.

Eventer98: LOL. I think there could be a whole forum for stomach/bowel upset! I have read stories on at least 3 trip reports.

MomofCKJ: Allyson (cool spelling)- Thank you! I enjoyed your trip report. Sadly, I have been a lurker reader but am trying to remedy that as I now know how cool it is to get replies!

Disfan3: I wrote Disney about the companion restrooms and proposed they put up a sign so people know...How sad that kids grow up so fast...Thank you for your kind remarks.

BlueBayou: Thanks for joining the journey. I try to be descriptive.

kpk89: Thanks for your understanding. I was never sworn at but have gotten some looks and a cast member tried to kick me out of the bathroom (that's much later). Thank you for your kind comments...

Now to the magical night!

A little prelude:
Yesterday I went to UCSF because my GJ tube broke. It actually happened on Sunday at church when I was in the bathroom with my friend Laura. She caught it and pushed it back in. Every other time the tube has broken at home. The ironic thing is that the tube always breaks during a holiday. Thankfully the tube was still in the correct position and the change in Interventional Radiology went very well! Minimal pain and I got to visit with several people from the hospital. I am telling this because I wrote this update last night (yes, I do procrastinate-but almost always get it done!).

Anyway back to July 19, 2006

We have just had a pretty good day at Magic Kingdom. A Magical Entrance, fun attractions, and caught the pin trading fever albeit a looooong lunch.

Now we are off to SpectroMagic.

We headed to the wheelchair parking by the partner’s statue. I sat between Mom and Danielle with a little extra space on both sides so Dad could get to my trach to suction and put on the vent. I was very impressed with the cast member directing the seating. She was really on top of things. A couple people tried to sneak into the wheelchair seating.

“Who are you with?”
(point)
“Is this person with your party?”
“No”
“This area is reserved for people in wheelchairs and their party only. You need to find another seat.”

The wheelchair seating has two rows. She made sure that the people in wheelchairs in the second row didn’t have people standing in front of them. Dad had to be by me so he crouched or sat on the ground. The cast member directed small children to sit in front of the wheelchairs. An adult tried to sneak up and she made her move to the back. The cast member watched the children carefully and made sure they stayed seated and didn’t bother others. I wish I could remember her name…

Spectromagic was wonderful!! “On this magic night a million stars will play beside us, Cast a spell of light, glimmering, shimmering, carousel-ling. 'Round the world tonight, a symphony in SpectroMagic. Pure enchantment lights our way!” The spell was soon woven as one of the butterfly’s came up to
me,

100_0124-1.jpg

“Thank you for coming to our show, princess, I hope you enjoy it.”
100_0126-1.jpg

Danielle was eating the corn dogs from Casey’s when Peter Pan came up to her.
“Ooh, can I have some?”
100_0137-1.jpg

“Sure.”
I think her answer surprised him, but staying in character, “What is it?”
“Corn dogs.”
“Nah, thanks-I’m in the mood for chicken.”

“Music surrounds us, laughter that found us, twirling around this carousel of light and laughter! We shall remember this moment together. Let this night forever live in our dreams!”

I gazed enchanted at each float: Pinocchio who made a heart and pointed at me,

I just smiled and felt the magic swell within. What an awesome parade!

The Cast Member was keeping the area roped off for wheelchair seating for Wishes. Pretty cool because there is usually no wheelchair seating. So we deviated from “the plan” and stayed for Wishes. Oh, it was so good!!! From the moment I heard that little girls pure voice:

“Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish, I wish tonight. We'll make a wish, and do as dreamers do, and all our wishes (all our wishes), will come true.” My eyes began to swell with tears because, oh, how I wanted my dreams to come true! And right now I was experiencing a dream-to be here at Walt Disney World. “Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you through. When you wish upon a star, your dreams...come true.”

Shooting star fireworks flew over the castle and Tinker Bell flew down as the music swelled: “If your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme”

Then we were taken through a dazzling display of different dreams. As “I Can Go the Distance” played I smiled and thought-we went the distance! I loved the Sorcerer Mickey scene where the fireworks were seamlessly synced to the music.

The evil queen from Snow White tried to corrupt the magic of wishes but was beaten. Isn’t it great to be in a world where good always prevails?

The finale all to quickly approached:
“…And the best part is, you'll never run out of wishes. They're shining deep down inside of you. 'Cause that my friends is where the magic lives.”

Wishes=hope. Something to strive for –to believe in. A dream. A goal for the future. A purpose. We all need a purpose…we all have a purpose…

Fireworks magnificently burst forth in every direction while the song erupted in all its glory:

“Wishes! Dream a dream (fate is kind)
Wishes! Set it free (she brings to those who love)
Wishes! Trust your heart (the sweet fulfilment of)
Just Believe (their secret longing)
Just Believe (just believe)

Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you through.
When you wish upon a star, your dreams...come...true

Make a wish, and do as dreamers do (just do as dreamers do)

Make a wish!

(Wishes!) Dream a dream!
(Wishes!) Cross your heart!
And your wish...will...come...true!”

Wow.

Everything was worth it-just for this…

But there was the manner of exiting. I tried to keep that wonderfully happy and magical feeling in a bubble while traversing the crowd. Vital that I am not separated. Careful and concentrated driving to dodge people who stop abruptly or almost walk into me and always observing little children in case they tried to make a mad dash.

We were almost out of the park and the traffic had thinned out so I relaxed the space between Mom’s chair to about two feet. I see this lady about 4 feet away on my right look at the distance between our two chairs twice, three times- calculating. Briefly looks me in the eye and then in a split second grabs her daughters hand and runs between Mom and I. I am in cruise mode, traveling at a steady rate-Mom isn’t. At that same instant someone cut in front of Mom so she slowed rapidly. I had to turn quickly to the right to avoid hitting the woman’s daughter-almost losing Mom but missing the child.

The lady turned and gave me the vilest look. That really hurt. :sad1: I mean she calculated that move and ran. I narrowly missed them and in the effort nearly got separated from Mom who was carrying my suction bag. My heart was racing. I was so concerned about accidentally hurting someone and losing my family. Both had nearly happened.

I calmed myself with the happy memories of the night. On the monorail ride back the magical song played in my head, making me smile:
:wizard:
“Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might have the wish, I wish tonight. Oh, a world of wishes. A world where dreams come true. So make a wish, see it through. Dare to do what dreamers do. Wishes, dream a dream. Wishes, set it free. Wishes, trust your heart. Just believe.

We're all just children, reaching for our dreams. There shining high above us, and even though it seems, so far (so far). We put our faith and hope on a shooting star. Wishes, dream a dream. Wishes, set it free. Wishes, trust your heart. Just believe (oh, believe).

Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight. I wish I may I wish I might have the wish I wish tonight. We'll make a wish, and do as dreamers do. And all our wishes (all our wishes), all our wishes…will come true.
Oh, wishes…Wishes.”

Just typing and reflecting on this makes my heart smile.

This night has lived forever in my dreams.

Oh Christmae! I think I have had that same cm who helped with the parade before. Isn't it wonderful! I think that when that happened with me I realized that it was the first time that I had ever watched the parade the whole way through.

I am sorry about the mom and child. You have to wonder why she just did not wait until you had passed. Some people!

I don't think I have that pin in my collection. I do have a lot of DA pins though. Is there another that you are wanting? :cool1:
