We just returned (a couple of days ago) from our WDW trip and drove from North of DC (about 14.5 hrs by the book). We didn't do it in one stretch, but split it over 2 days.....
Car Games worked to keep me and dh occupied (kids activities are below). Specifically, our take on the LICENSE PLATE GAME. We've taken this basic game and adapted it to be an educational experience for the kids as they grow.
What we've done is handicapped the game.
1. Basic -- Any license plate counts.
2. Handicap #1 -- No Temp Tags.
3. Handicap #2 -- No commercial vehicles (trucks, U-Haul trailers, etc.)
4. Handicap #3 -- Can't count the state you are currently in (i.e. if you are in New York you can't use NY).
5. Handicap #4 -- Can't count any NEIGHBORING states -- this is when the game gets challenging (i.e. if you're in Pennsylvania, can't count Ohio, West Virginia, NY, Delaware, Maryland, NJ). This requires the players to really know their geography.
For the kids, DVDs and favorite toys. DH and I took our DVR and recordable DVDs and created 4 hour disks to use during the drive. And by doing it ourselves, we mixed their favorite programs so we didn't get totally sick of any single one. Realize that our kids are nearly 4 and 2 year old twins, so their favorite shows include things like Bunnytown and Handy Manny, Blues Clues, etc. They didn't always watch them -- like I said we also brought their toys -- but it definitely gave them something to do during the unbelievably boring drive down I-95.
