Driver's permit needed as ID?

My two teens just got their driver's permits. We are flying 7/20. Do they actually need to show these at the airport? They've never had anything to show before and I don't really want the permits lost on vacation.

For a US domestic flight, no passenger under age 18 is required to show photo ID. TSA will ask their names and sometimes their birthdays, but they do not have to show photo ID.
