Hi All!

Can a Driver's permit for a 17 yr old be used as the form of ID at the airport? He will be traveling by himself.

Thanks!

A 17 yr old would actually not required to show ID for air travel (it's required for those 18 and older). But, you never know if he will be asked, especially if he looks older. The driver's permit should do, along with another ID that does have a picture - like a school ID.
If time permits, you may want to get him a state ID. They are usually obtained from the same place as the driver's license and look like one, but just say they are for ID and not for driving.

I had a State ID card for my daughter when she was 15, used this for ID for her until she got he picture drivers license.

ID is not required for a 17 year old PERIOD. There is no reason to bother getting a state issued ID card to travel. He could use his learners permit and/or school ID if he wants to show he's under 18 but that's not even necessary.

If at all possible I would suggest bringing some sort of photo ID-- school ID card, bus pass, anything with a photo.

And I firmly believe that everyone should have some sort of ID, regardless of age. Should a medical crisis come up, there needs to be some sort of way to determine who you are.
