Drive or fly?

Trying to decide if we should drive or fly to New York (actually staying in Weehawken NJ).

DH and I are debating on what to do.

Driving is going to be 13-14+ hours so the better part of a day with two kids in the car = arriving and being completely wiped out. Can't see that we will need the car after arrival. Will have to pay to park the car at the hotel. Would still be about $450 cheaper than flying unless we rent a car......DH wants to rent if we drive.....which brings it to just about $200 cheaper than flying.

Flying will get us there in about 4 & 1/2 hours with a connecting flight in Chicago.....that's if there are no delays, etc. A little more $$$$ but cuts our travel time in 1/2. Flying isn't my favorite thing in the world but thinking the drive home will be a rough and stressful one after several busy days in the city.

I'm thinking if we fly we should be able to get a shuttle from the airport to the hotel and wouldn't need to rent a car there.

Thinking I need to have several big weekend yard sales (clean out my basement) and earn the extra $$$ for the flight.

What do you all think?

13 to 14+ hour drive? Where in NY are you going? I'm assuming it's upstate NY. Am I correct?

I'm assuming NYC, since they're staying in Weehawken. I'd fly - once you get closer, you are bound to encounter traffic along the way.

13-14 hours with kids in a car? I would fly.

I would fly, no question, unless I planned on doing a lot of sight seeing along the way-and I would need a 2 week trip to drive that far with sight seeing.

Looks like everyone else understands, but me b/c I'm so confused . Is the starting point of the drive Weehawken, NJ? If so, it shouldn't take 13+ hours to get to NYC. Weehawken is right by the Lincoln Tunnel. Am I missing something?

I think the starting point of the trip is 13+ hours from Weehawken/NYC (they're staying in NJ to visit NYC).

Fly. I don't know how old your kids are but I would NOT drive 13+ with my two and they're 10 & 12 :lmao:

Where in Weehawkin are you staying? Maybe you could find a hotel closer to one of the airports. Even though I live in NJ, the only thing I know about Weehawkin is the ferry, Chart House & Lincoln Tunnel :)

How are you getting from Weehawkin to Yankee Stadium? If you're driving and with traffic it could be a nightmare to get in & out.

I would fly. 13-14 hours could easily become way more than that, once you get closer to NYC. Weehawken to NYC can sometimes be an hour (sometimes ten minutes) depending on tunnel traffic.

I hope the airport you intend to fly into is Newark.

Fly. Jersey girl now NY girl and dh used to work for the TVA. He only drove himself for the trip up to NJ from Johnson City.. I would go nuts with kids for 13 hours.

Thanks everyone!

Sorry for the confusion. The point of departure 13/14 hours is Tennessee.

I did figure out that we needed to fly into Newark if that's what we decide to do.

I think getting to the Yankees game will be public transportation but haven't decided on the best route for that yet. Looking at the Clipper. Anyone know the most time efficient means to travel there?

Thanks!

I've never taken the Clipper - it sounds fun, though. If you're taking the subway, you want to get on an uptown D or 4 train to Yankee Stadium. You can grab the 4 at Grand Central.

Fly fly fly.

I guess I'm biased because I HATE long car trips. Best of luck, whichever you chose!

Fly, and really search for some good deals on tickets. Check different airports, times of day, days of week.

Seems to me flying could end up being cheaper.

What's the Clipper? I've never heard of it.

Yes, do NOT drive to Yankee Stadium, you will be stuck in traffic for another 13 hours getting there and back. I think it's like 50 minutes from Grand Central to the stadium on the D train.

Why are you staying in Weehawkin? The ferry is very slow, inefficient, and not as many ferry crossings as buses through the Lincoln Tunnel. There is something called "Park & Ride" from NJ. Where you can park your car at certain parking lots in NJ and then hop on the bus to Manhattan.

NJ Transit bus 320 is one of those buses. There is a whole complex of about 3-4 hotels at the Meadowlands shopping complex in Secaucus, near the Meadowlands Convention Center. The bus loops around by each hotel & picks up & drops off people. So you can even leave a car at the hotel. The ride is about 30 minutes.

There are no shuttle buses to this complex, but you can get a taxi and pile in, it will take you to the hotels.
