I am updating the iPod for the bar I manage. What songs would YOU want to listen to while out enjoying a few beers? :drinking1 :drinking1?

What I would want to hear and what the bar would want to hear are probably two different things. What's the crowd like? Younger, older? Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer usually gets a crowd going.

A lot, really a lot, depends on the type of bar. For a good place to relax and enjoy some drinks and good conversation I would go with Diana Krall and similar artists. One country club I play at with a 6-piece band we do standards, jazz, Latin and some country and light rock. The crowd is older and we have dining and dancing with the bar area off to the back. For younger crowds, I would have no clue.

It is an Ale House for a brewery.

We are moving to a new location, in a town with a much bigger population. The crowd has been bikers on a ride, locals, people on a brewery tour and just random people who saw us on the road and stoped. Ages from 21 - 70+ What it will be now, in our new location, is still to be seen. I am guessing we will have more locals & regulars than before.

I have in the past had a wide variety of music and plan to keep it that way. I try to stay away from rap and head-bagging metal. I tend to listen to mostly country so that is why I need help with the rock/pop/top40, etc.

anything by ac/dc. mony, mony... and that song where they say, "alice, alice, who the (blank) is alice...

Classic rock is always good. My bar had the greater response to Aerosmith, Steve Miller, Beatles, Stones, etc.

It was a sports bar with a vast age range and social culture. We had everyone from bikers to factory workers to college students.

Some classic Motown usually works well. Throw in some Maroon 5, Dave Matthews Band, Jazz, Blues, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Beatles, Michael Jackson & you've covered a wide demographic.

What have you been playing recently?

It's hard to gauge what songs to play without an example.

Without knowing the vibe of the place it's a tough call.

Popluar songs from the jukebox:
The Joker Steve Miller Band
Come Together The Beatles
Satisfaction Rolling Stones
Fighter Christina Aguilera
Shakedown Street Grateful Dead
Pretty much anything by Fergie
Boys and Girls Good Charlotte
Ants Marching / What Would You Say Dave Matthews Band
Hey Girl O.A.R.
Santeria Sublime
Stairway to Heaven Led Zepplin

Stuff like that. It was low key, upbeat, and tolerable.

Just take a page out of John Cusick's script from High Fidelity... just put on something that you can ignore.

There is a group that performs here in Renaissance Festivals called the Jolly Rogers. They have one song that would be hilarious, although I don't know if it's what you're looking for. It's called "one of the road" and the chorus basically lists every type of alcohol imaginable as fast as you can. When it's performed, they try to get teh audience to sing along. It's hilarious at the end of the day when they do the pub sing and people are trying to keep up while they are somewhat less than sober.

American Pie

The bar I went to in college played it every night at closing time and we would all put our arms around each other and sing at the top of our lungs and sway. And since we were all drunk as skunks it was quite a sight.

So every time I hear American Pie I associate it with drinking lots of beer!

If I'm in a bar, it's probably an Irish Pub:

Time, Drink em 'Up by Gaelic Storm
Johnny Jump Up/Morrison's Jig by Gaelic Storm
Wild Rover by The Pogues

Almost Irish...
Tub Thumping by Chumbawumba

And not Irish...
Closing Time by Semisonic
