Drinking from bottle/sippy cup on take-off with new restrictions???

We have travelled 3x now with DS and we have been pretty diligent about having him drink fluids from bottle and now sippy cup (he is now 17 mos) on take-off and landing for ear issues as warned by pedi. Now with the new restrictions, we cannot bring on anything but formula or breast milk (which he is long past), we have nothing we can give him to drink on take-off. How important is this for 18 month old kids? Does anybody know? Last time (14-15 mos) we got him to drink on both take-off and landing but sparingly and he seemed to do okay. It just makes me nervous. Anybody know the repercussions of this?

Thanks!

I thought that I read that juice was also allowed?

I think if it's in a bottle and it's milk, no one will taste test to see if its from the breast.
However, they will not allow a sippy cup, at least from what I've read. I think your child will be fine. He can chew some gum. I have traveled via air w/my DD 9 so many times that she has earned at least 3 award flights herself and gum always worked.

To be safe, you may want to call the airport or see if the TSA has a website or has posted the restricited list on the web somewhere. Maybe FAA site or something. Or even just the airport website.

I believe juice is allowed....I'm planning on taking an unopened sealed bottle of OJ and hoping for the best. If they make me leave it I will just be a pain to the flight attendants requesting a juice before take off to put in DD's sippy cup. I hate to be a pain, but I'd rather do that than my DD be in pain.

Are you not allowed to have anything on the plane or is just thru the security check point? I think every airport I have been to has restaurants/snack bars/magazine stands that sell drinks around the gates. If after you have been thru security can you not get anything at these places? Have they cleared them of liquids? :confused3

Which part of NO LIQUIDS/GELS ALLOWED is not understood.

Milk and formula for an infant is permitted. No juice. No water. No soda.

Check out the TSA web site.

They have no cleared the bars/fast food places of liquids, you just can not go onboard with any liquid.

can you bring an empty sippy cup and ask a flight attendant for a bottle of juice when you get on?

Um, yeah I was just coming back to say that I had found my answer. Dh brought it up and it was something I hadn't thought about. (the places after security check points.) Sorry I didn't get that quick enough for you. There's alot of info out there and everyone is trying to sort it out. Flying with young children only complicates it even more.

I wouldn't recommend giving gum to a 17 month old child. My son is almost 19 months old and is definitely not ready for gum. In fact I have to remind him to chew his food instead of swallowing it whole since he just tends to shovel it in (and is still only in the 25 percentile for weight). JMO

I have to agree WHO on earth would give a 17 month old gum?? :confused3 What I used when we flew when my DS was 20 months old was those fruit chews made with real fruit. And that was a real treat. I would NOT give a child that young any type of candy that's for sure.

To the original poster, could you not just put some regular milk in the sippy cup? Or take the empty sippy cup and carry the milk on in a bottle?

Good luck

It's not that simplistic. The TSA also revises the rules. Yes, no juice is allowed.

OP, please take a look at the TSA website for specifics: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/index.shtm

I am flying tomorrow to Seattle. My 1yo doesn't drink formula - she breastfeeds and drinks soymilk. I got an aseptic container of soymilk and small sealed packets of organic milk. I am hoping I don't have to dump them. :confused3

"Canned, jarred, or processed baby food is permitted in your carry-on baggage and aboard your plane." so I will bring some of those, too.

GL! :wizard:

Thank goodness for the baby food response. I've been trying everywhere to find out if my 6mo old can eat that day. We've got a four hour stopover so we'll be on teh go from 10am to 6pm and then another 2hrs to WDW. She's breastfed so no formula but I havent been able to find anywhere if I can take her strained food (sealed in bottles) on board with me. Even the airline can't help. I've got an email to the TSA and havent heard back yet. For the poster that found that info, where did you find it? Is it the same for international flights (Canada to US)?

As for the juice, I'm going to give it a shot for DS3. He always drinks juice on take off and landing for his ears. I read on some sites that its allowed if you have little ones travelling so we'll see.

This is what I plan to do if the restriction is still on in October (though I will probably request H2O)...OR I will bring a baby bottle with milk in it and an empty sippy cup since DD won't take the bottle then.

To the OP - I am planning on buying my kids earplanes for our trip. They are supposed to help with cabin pressure and ear issues. Maybe this would be an option for your DS since he didn't take a lot of juice the last time you flew with him. Check out the website for earplanes (www.earplanes.com).

HTH!

You could also offer your toddler a pacifier or maybe even a lollypop to suck during take-off/landing. It's not that fluids help the inner ear pressure, but rather the sucking or chewing motion.

From the TSA.GOV web site:

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE.

SUCH ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.

Exceptions: Baby formula and medicines, which must be presented for inspection at the checkpoint.

Beverages purchased in the boarding area, beyond the checkpoint, must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted onboard the aircraft.

Passengers traveling from the United Kingdom to the United States will be subject to a more extensive screening process.

These measures will be constantly evaluated and updated as circumstances warrant

----------------------------

There are no exceptions for juice. Or water.

My sister is a flight attendant. I have a friend flying with a 20 month old in a couple days. She told them to have an empty sippy cup out and ready when boarding. When boarding just ask if they could put juice/ water in the cup. They will do it because they know the little ones need it for thier ears.

Thanks for all the posts. I believe juice is no longer allowed. The airline we are flying (Midwest Airlines) had juice allowed posted Thursday but yesterday it was removed. They keep updating these changes, so it helps to keep on your toes!

My plan is to try to bring an empty sippy cup and request juice b4 take-off. I HOPE the flight attendants will comply. If not, we will have to wait for the beverage service. At least we will keep some water or juice ready for landing once beverages are served.

Also, just curious - does anybody know if thumb sucking counts? I have always wondered this. He really sucks hard too...???

I might call the pedi to see how impt the beverage and/or sucking is at this age.

Thanks and good luck to those travelling...this is not easy, but hopefully worth it!

what age do they consider a baby or toddler? My 2 yr old drinks alot of milk, reg milk though, not formula.

and I would assume diaper cream (Desitin) is out of the question. Does anyone know if they make it in a "wipe" version. If not, maybe I should pattent it. LOL
