Their question is allowed and is perfectly fine. You can do this at WDW resorts, you dont get a discount when reactivating it, but you also dont have cups piling up at home that you wont use. I dont know if this works at Aulani though. This is considered skating the rules of Disney and not allowed to the boards.
We’ve been Aulani DVC members since, the machines have always been regular soda machines like you find at a fast food restaurant without any special tech. We bring our popcorn buckets back too for the refills.Doesn't Aulani just have regular soda machines now? I don't think you need to activate anything.
My $100,000 initial Aulani DVC investment and many $1000’s in annual dues say otherwise.I guess what people are missing is the cups are meant for one trip only without having to pay again. Your subsequent trips you need to pay again if you want to use your cup again or you are essentially stealing from Disney. Regardless if it will let you get soda doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay again which “reactivates” its use.

Next time you’re there, read the sign for the cups:
REFILLABLE MUGS TO BE USED AT RESORT REFILLABLE MUG STATIONS FOR UNLIMITED SOFT DRINHS, TEA, & COFFEE
The sign would say something like during your current stay or similar, or they would chip them like other resorts if they wanted to limit them. Also ask the workers in Ulu Café and they will say the same. We asked again once they started selling the more expensive stainless ones and got the same answer as always; ok to bring back next time.

I'm trying to look over my contracts and even as a membership extra perk I can't find this unlimited soda for the life of my contract. If it was there I suppose I would be investing in a lot of tape and glue to hold the sacred cup together for 50 years. My $100,000 initial Aulani DVC investment and many $1000’s in annual dues say otherwise.

We can certainly say that I suppose but remember Hawaii is a very environmentally conscious location so that could have also been apart of them stating that but the signs like @VGCgroupie posted have been at the machines for quite a while although I can't remember if they were there when the freestyle machines were used.In defense of @JoeHawai’i , and yes, I get the official policy, but as we were at Aulani last time (when the metal cups went on sale - sidebar, why were these so hard to get at the beginning? Had to be at Ulu early!) the CM at the register literally told the lady to bring it back every time she came. Now, was the CM thinking in the back of their mind "and pay for it"? Probably yes, but the way it was stated, I could see where people get the impression.
You've only been Aulani owners for slightly over a year, at most, then. They changed from Coke Freestyle Machines back to regular machines at the end of 2024. Not sure how one year gets you much Aulani street cred compared to many posters on here. We’ve been Aulani DVC members since, the machines have always been regular soda machines like you find at a fast food restaurant without any special tech. They for sure want you to bring them back. Save the earth and all paired with getting goods to Hawaii isnt as easy as WDW. But the mugs/cups are never intended to be pay once get free drinks for life.In defense of @JoeHawai’i , and yes, I get the official policy, but as we were at Aulani last time (when the metal cups went on sale - sidebar, why were these so hard to get at the beginning? Now popcorn buckets, they don't seem to care, as long as it's a Disney one. Of course, DVC members get free popcorn refills, so there is that. That said, it's FOMO if you don't have the latest design, right?
