"Dressing your age"...?

Just stay away from Hollister, Abercrombie, Aero, etc. and you should be fine.

What if you're not in the "career world"?

If you are over the age of a normal college grad you should not be dressing like a 14 year old in public, period.

If I wore a trend the first time around, I tend to skip it now....

This made me laugh!! It was a great way to put what you were saying!
(Though I do remember a couple of particularly comfy trends I'd love to see come back.)

OP, wear what you want! It doesn't sound like you're talking about modesty (which I think should increase a bit as our bodies age) but just fashion - and I really think we as a society are waaay too concerned with fashion.

I'd feel more visually assaulted but the 20 year old that squeezes into s****y jeans and spills out all over them like some kind of meat volcano eruption than a 40 year old who still had a great body and wanted to show it off.

ETA: Only on the community board would the word s k i n n y be considered a bad word that needs filtered :rotfl:

When I first read your reply I thought the offending word was one that starts with sl***y which could also be used to describe jeans.. Maybe the DIS should reconsider?

I think any of the brands "taken over" by the teens should be off limits for women of a mature age. I cringe everytime I see a 40+ woman in a pair of PINK sweats. Even the kids know you don't wear them as a matching set...:rotfl2:

i think it means skip the Junior section

I see new professionals all the time around here that are just shopping in the wrong department, you can get cute clothes but the juniors cut just wont work it anymore
(aka adult clothes come with a little more support)
Basically the time for "stink and shrinks" or cheap club clothes is over

Totally agree and so does Stacey.

If I wore a trend the first time around, I tend to skip it now. I'm 48. I have great legs but mini-skirts are ridiculous on me--I look like I'm trying too hard to look like my 19 yo dd.

I actually think that when older women get too trendy, it makes them look older. I try to avoid that by sticking with classic items instead of the latest trends.

Exactly my thoughts.

Meat volcano is funny but the official wording is "muffin top."

A lady at Victoria's Secret also mentioned that if your bra is too tight and the girls are busting out that is called a "cupcake" :rotfl:

I think wearing too tight, too loose or ill-fitting clothes is a worse offense than dressing younger.

I also like meaty disaster or looks like a basset hound's mouth. It paints a better picture..we'll not better, but more truthful.

I think that once you're over 30, big-print slogans and brand logos on tees are still fine if they are meant to be very casual, but not if you are wearing them to go out to any kind of occasion, other than wearing a sports logo tee to a sporting event. For instance, I wouldn't wear one to a happy hour at a trendy bar.

I would wear one at a trendy bar in a heartbeat and I have seen others (late 20's to their late 30's) do the same. However, it has to be done "right". The tee should be a bit fitted and paired with a tailored jacket, dark wash jeans, and boots. This look is a really nice mix of casual/trendy.

Personally, I dress a bit more boho/gypsy with a contemporary twist.

I don't care how toned your abs are, if you're over 40 and not on a beach, they shouldn't be showing!

OMG this one just totally made my day! LOL, I've seen this on a regular basis but have NEVER had it described so... colorfully! :rotfl:

I turned 40 in March; until very recently I was wearing what my 14YO daughter affectionately called "mom clothes". I went out a couple of weeks ago and got myself a pair of lower-slung jeans to try on, took off my outer shirt leaving only my tank, and stepped out to show my daughter. The look on her face was PRICELESS!! "Mumma... I didn't know you were shaped like that!" :lmao: I wasn't, until just a couple of months ago! :thumbsup2

Im 33 and I shop at Aero and Hollister. Also Forever 21 and Rue 21. Im 5'4" and 105lbs. Im shaped like a 14 year old girl so my options are limited. My DD is 14 and we share clothes all the time but I think I dress appropriately. I also love Banana Republic and the Gap though.

I say wear what you want and don't worry about what others think. Except the mom jeans!:scared1:

Not the MOM jeans! :scared1:

I try to dress in classic styles, but every once in awhile I throw something trendy in there too. I do try to keep it somewhat age appropriate, but I guess what is age appropriate to me- might not be to someone else. Oh well!

"skinny" is bad? It shows up when I type it. What am I missing? Do I have the wrong word?

No, that was the word that was getting ***'d out. Looks like they removed skinny from the word filter. It had to be a mistake in the first place. I'm pretty sure even China doesn't censor that word online.

The Disboards- the only place where skinny is not good! :rotfl:

I'm 34, 5'2, and I weigh 98-100 lbs. My options are really limited, especially for pants. I usually do pretty well with Old Navy for khakis, and sometimes jeans.

I'm not trying to dress like a teenager, but it is really hard to find things in my size in "normal" stores.

It isn't so much the jeans but what you pair it with. I agree, for tiny women it is difficult to find jeans that fit since most stores start at a 3 or 4 but then don't top it off with a Tee with AERO plastered across the chest--THAT is what makes you look like you are trying to dress like a 14 year old-which for grown women is silly. YOU (not you specifically but those that do) may think you look cute but the rest of the world....

I actually think that when older women get too trendy, it makes them look older. I try to avoid that by sticking with classic items instead of the latest trends.

I definitely agree with this. A lot of my older co-workers try to dress like they're in their 20s and it makes them appear older.

Once you hit your 40s, it becomes a matter of can vs should, IMO. I'm 52 on the smallish side and could get away with short shorts or minis but why would I? There is nothing more ridiculous than an aging woman-face it, no matter how good you look 40 is aging-dressing like a teenager. It seems like desperation.
