We are so excited to be going to Disney in October this year, usually go in May. We would like to go to MNSSHP but do my kids, 11 & 13, have to dress up to trick or treat?

No, they don't need to dress up.

We only had our girls dress up once for MNSSHP and immediately regretted it. There are few costumes that don't make the kids wearing them hot, and it's generally still hot enough without any help as it is in October.

Like previously mentioned, no a costume is not required to participate in any of the events.

Some people believe it adds to the fun, I don't think it matters one way or the other.

We dressed up and it was fun, but I made sure to pick costumes that were comfy and not hot.

We were a theme family, the boys wore their soccer shorts & jersey's, I wore a shirt that said "Soccer Mom" and dh and dd wore Referee jersey's. I thought it was cute :cutie:

I would say there were more people NOT dressed up than dressed up when we were there.

I highly recommend dressing up! its fun and something the adults as well as the kids can do together. This past year we went as the ghost from Haunted Mansion. Me and my brother (17) were the hitchhiking ghost. We find a beard and a wig and painted it grey and white with hairspray. We then took a plain grey shirt that went to his knees. We then took black cloth and we burned small strips of it and glued it to his shirt. We then got a chain and glued it to the costume. He then wore shoes we painted whiteish grey that we found online. I was the tall hitchhiking ghost with the top hat and wig. I found a wig with a bald cap on the top and hair that came down on both sides. We painted it grey and trimmed it up to make it the right size. I then wore a white button up we put a little grey on. I wore a green vest thing that people wear with suits and we painted it somewhat grey with green mixed in. I then had a bowtie, top hat, and a suit jacket we painted grey. (A nice suit jacket too) I then painted dress pants. (Not full painted as we wanted to look ghostly and old not metallic) Then found some old dress shoes we painted.

My father and mother went as ball room ghost. She found a huge undercarriage to go under the old dress she bought online. We put some grey and white on it and bought her a wig from the 1800s era. Painted it some and made a little bow for it. Talk about big hair! We then bought pearls and jewelry that went with the outfit and looked old and dated. My father had a old suit literally from the early 1900s we found online. We painted it and worked it up and then painted what parts of his hair that were not already white or grey. My sister was the bride. We found an old simple gown type dress online. (Took forever to find) We then found shoes and other materials for the dress. We wore white and grey paint on hour faces, necks and hands. We put a little black on the cheeks to give a more hollow look to our faces. My oldest sister kept my nephew and niece as they went to another park that night. (They didn't like the Halloween thing)

Talk about attention. People were literally stopping us for pictures. We were walking down Main Street and were stopped by a couple. As we stopped other people were taking pictures. Cast members said they weren't suppose to say this but that we had the best costumes so far that year. A British couple stopped us out of Space Mountain and said they wanted a picture for the photo book at home. So yea were in a photo book. The attention was to much to handle. Oh and don't even ask what happened on Haunted Mansion. Anyway I say ALLLLLLLL that to say dress up...its worth it. Making costumes is also more fun then simply buying them.

Figmentforever24 sounds like one of the people I envy whenever we go to MNSSHP! DH and I never do anything more than a Disney Halloween themed shirt, and when I see the gorgeous, elaborate, thought-filled costumes some people make/wear, I get so jealous! However I'm not the creative type so I continue to stare in awe from afar  That said, there are always TONS of people NOT dressed up, and tons in Halloween t-shirts and nothing more (well, pants :) ). DS's now 12 & 8 have always dressed up but as another pp said, even Oct. is hot and before long they'd be taking pieces of their costumes off. We're going to the 1st party this year (hopefully) and neither son wants to dress up. This is fine with me as it is rumored to be Sept. 1st and I believe it will be MUCH hotter than when we've gone in Oct! So, if you decide not to dress up, you definitely won't stand out and feel weird. Enjoy! MNSSHP is most definitely my favorite thing in all of WDW:hmghost:

Oh its miserably hot. By the end of the night you are exhausted, but it is totally worth it. The year before that we made Batman villain costumes. That's a whole different story. lol

Everyone at the party is allowed to trick or treat, even the adults. :goodvibes
