Dressing or Stuffing

NJ here...and we call it stuffing!

I call it stuffing, my mom would stuff the turkey and then put the rest in a seperate pan. I always liked the one in the pan :) it comes out crispier.

Here in NY it's stuffing too but when I lived in Ky it was dressing.
I love my mom's recipe for sausage stuffing. :goodvibes

Um......doesn't anyone call it "FILLING" ?

Both. And I make and serve both. DD12 is a vegetarian, so she gets dressing (made using veggie broth) that hasn't been stuffed into the turkey.

Stuffing is what you eat with turkey. Dressing is what you do when you put your clothes on. :)

I call it both although I do know that technically "stuffing" goes inside the turkey, but I never cook it that way.

As others have said, you can use the words interchangeably. I have noticed that most northerners tend to use mostly bread in their stuffings while southerners use cornbread or a combination of bread and cornbread in their dressings.

Yes, I have heard it called filling but mostly stuffing/dressing.

my parents, from MO, always called it/call it dressing. I remember consciously changing it to stuffing, myself, because it was less likely to be confused with salad dressing. At least that's what my teenage mind thought. Probably helped that we had moved to CA when I was 8 and most people there called it stuffing, at least among my friends.

We call it dressing but it is NOT the same thing as stuffing. We do not put it in the bird. I have had stuffing at my in laws and it was not what I was used to, I really don't care for it.

We spent one Christmas in Chicago with DH sister. She said she was making 'dressing' just for me. We get there for Christmas dinner and she is talking about the dressing she made for me and is so proud of herself. But I don't see any 'dressing'. :confused3 So I asked he what she was talking about. She pointed to what looked like cornbread salad or something and said it was dressing. :earseek: It was cold and had tomatoes. :confused3 :confused3

Down here, turkey-'n-dressing is one word :teeth:

As in we're having turkey 'n dressing, green beans, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, etc. for Thanksgiving dinner :goodvibes

And yes, it's made from cornbread and has sage. How much sage is the question. I don't like too much. I know you're supposed to love your own grandmother's the best, but I love DH's grandmother's even better than I love my own grandmother's! Shhh, don't tell my mom!

Ooh, only two more weeks! I can't wait! I make the sweet potato casserole, homemade mac and cheese, and also scalloped tomatoes. Yep, tomatoes. DH had never had them like that, but now they're his favorite and I have to make them a few other times a year besides Thanksgiving. We also make pumpkin spice cupcakes. :goodvibes My kids love them even though they don't like pumpkin pie :)

Laurie :)

We call it dressing because we don't cook it in the bird.

You can call it whatever you like, stuffing, dressing, filling, even. Just don't press in down in the pan before cooking so it comes out like a little brick. My MIL does this and I just can't understand why you would want to press it down in the pan. My mother just spoons it in before cooking. It remains lighter and has a good texture.

It's dressing, made with cornbread. You eat it with either smoked or fried turkey. You should have seen my face the first time I had Thanksgiving dinner at now DH's house. His mother put stuffing in the turkey and then baked it. My whole life, whenever I saw a picture with stuffing in a turkey, I thought that people just put it in there afterwords to serve it.

I do like bread stuffing now. It took a few years to get used to it. But I LOVE cornbread dressing. At Thanksgiving, DH eats more when we go to his mom's and I eat more when we get to my parent's house. Our kids are also like that. One eats more at Grandma's, one eats more at Nana's.

Am I the only one who puts sausage and sage in their stuffing?

Dressin' and it must be made with cornbread.
It's a regional thing, though. Some put nuts in their stuffing. Others use berries. Many make it with oysters.

Our dressin' includes the turkey pan drippings, giblets, celery, onion, egg, sage and stale biscuits. Cooked in a cast iron skillet. My favorite is the crust.

My mother is the fortunate one who learned by watching my grandmother. There are no measurements. I watch every year and one day I know I'll get the hang of it. I've tried several times.

It's really good. I could even do without the turkey.

Another Southerner here that calls it dressing. Like someone said ealier....Turkey and dressing is pretty much one word.

DRESSING!!!
And I can't wait! We do Thanksgiving at my parents house, but my Grandmother still makes her famous dressing for us.

Her recipe is a batch of cornbread, batch of biscuits, eggs, cream of chicken soup. You boil a chicken with onions, and use the broth and onions from that in it. Mix it all together, pour it in a pan, and bake till golden brown on top.

It's sooo rich and creamy, and sooo good! How many weeks is it till' Thanksgiving??? :teeth:
