dress questions...

ok, so i went for the first time yesterday and tried on dresses - what an experience! when i walked out wearing the first one and saw myself it was weird!

I have a few questions... How many gowns did you try on before you knew you had "the one" (I tried on 5 yesterday and love love loved one of them!!!)

when you flew with your gown, was it very bulky and could they fit it in the overhead bin easily?

if you were an intimate bride and had no guests or family present, who helped you into your dress? (that is what we are doing)

Hi

I went to two dress shops and fell in love with one from a magazine but when i put it on it was horrible so that was out. I tried on about 8 dresses in total and the 5th one made me feel like a princess. I tried others on after and I just didnt feel the same so i knew that it was the one!

Everyone says you know but i didnt think i would get that feeling about my dress and I did!

I'm going to be flying from the uk so any thoughts on packing would be good for me as well

I had originally scheduled 4 apointments at different bridal salons. I went to my first apointment and tried on about 8 dresses...I ended up getting the very first one I tried on! I just knew!!

ha, that's funny cause I tried that one on and looked like a fool!!!!! I am so glad you loved it because it's BEAUTIUFUL!!!! I am sure it looks awesome on you!!!!

I tried on 3 dresses so far and there is one that I keep picturing myself in when I picture the wedding, so I am going to try it on again soon!

It took me three shops.

The first shop was ok, but the dresses I didn't like and the shop was so busy. I had to share a changing room with another bride and three bridesmaids from another bridal party.

The second shop, the woman was really nasty. She told me that I will have to buy a cheap dress from a normal store and have it altered as all her wedding dresses are for people over 5feet tall. (I am 4foot 11inches). Also she told us off for touching the dresses without gloves on.

The third shop was on a farm (I thought there was no way I would find a dress on a farm!). I walked in and it was a barn that was coverted. It must have had over 100 dresses to try on. The woman was really kind and let me try on as many till I found one I liked. It took to the second dress. I knew straight away that was the one. I didn't bother with the rest I had lined up. I stayed in it for about an hour. It was really strange to see myself in it.


I am too from the UK and the woman who owns the barn, is going to pack it into a suitcase for me. I am slightly neavous to put it with the rest of the suitcase rather than take it on board the airplane. Any experiences would be great to hear from???

I went to my 1st and ended up being the only bridal appointment to try on dresses. I went for a particular dress with was very pretty but they had me try on 2 more, the second dress was not me and the 3rd dress one was the one. As soon as I looked at it in the mirror I know it was the one. My mom and aunt were with me and they immediatly said that is one one. So dress shoppiing was easy for me, I got lucky.

Carolyn Allen's offers gown steaming services for those of you who will need to get all of the wrinkles out. It's probably a good idea after you stuff your dress into a box or suitcase! Plus, I figure if you don't have anyone who can help you into your dress I wouldn't see why Carolyn wouldn't be kind enough to assist. Steaming for your gown and veil is $65, and they'll come to your room. Additional pieces are $15.

Also, as far as packing dresses goes, I didn't want the hassle of dragging my dress on the plane. It's a bit too heavy and big, otherwise I'd suck it up and go for it! I was happy to find out that Carolyn Allen's will also take any dress shipments to their store and store it for you until your wedding day. This only includes your dress and veil, but that's all I need them to take! The storage costs $15 dollars and they ask that you don't send it earlier than two weeks in advance.

DH and I looked in some magazines/online and found the dress we both were crazy about. I went into the store, tried on that dress... and knew it was the one (you just know!). I didnt want to try on anymore but DB insisted I try on a couple more... I did it to humor them. I tried on 2 more dresses and finally told them I was waisting their time and mine... it was dress number 1!!

I took my dress on the flight and each time (VERY SMALL PLANES... one seat on one side, 2 seats on the other) they put my dress in the captains closet. It fit fine. With Carolyn Allens coming I didnt worry very much. If you go to the front desk at the gate and tell them you have a dress the person checking you in will more than likely let you board first and get your dress in the closet up front.

If I were going without parents (which was my first plan)... I would have made arrangements with the person doing my hair to help me get into my dress. She is practically there that long, especially since she helps you into your veil. Your hair will run back to back with you leaving... so they are probobly your best bet. I would just mention it to them and then tip them pretty good for it!!

I tried on 15 dresses and number 15 was it! I tried on several that day that I loved but this was the only one that made my bottom lip quiver

The year before my sister and mother went into the same dress shop to pick up a bridesmaids dress for a wedding my sister was in. She was looking at the wedding gowns and pulled one out to show my mother. They both agreed it was a beautiful dress. A year later I tried it on and you guessed it lucky number 15!!!

I am flying Southwest and they told me I could put it in the overhead bin. I am just worried about getting it through security.

We only went to one store. Dress #3 was "THE ONE"! It was packed with a form and then I carried it on the plane. Luckily the plane had a closet (I found out in advance) and the flight attendants where happy to take care of it for us and let us board early and even stood at the door of the plane when we got off and handed us the dress and wished us luck.

I originally only tried one dress on, bought it took it home. Then I began second guessing myself that I decided too quickly and didn't "browse" enough. So I went back and tried on two more and left with the same one i came in with.

So, as other posters have said when you know, you know. I kept the very first one I tried on!

i am not sure what airline you are flying with, but Southwest does not have the "captain's closet" like mentioned in previous posts. I was told by the airline that they can lay it in the overhead bin before the passengers board the plane to assure there is space for the dress. i suggest calling your airline to get a better idea of what to expect.

I tried on a ton of dresses a couple of years before the wedding and found out what looked good on me (I thought I wanted long, sheer sleeves, no strapless - lol). The wedding was postponed, so 2 years later, I went to DB to try on a dress that I had seen here on a disney bride and loved. 5 months before the wedding, after my mom said "you really have to order your dress NOW" my sister and I did a final bridal shop tour before going to order the DB dress...happened upon a trunk show where they had THE dress!

After trying on all those dresses and countless hours online, I knew exactly what I wanted (strapless, sweetheart, boned bodice, organza ballgown skirt) but couldn't find it anywhere until that trunk show...

If you find something you love, get it and stop looking! LOL My dress came in 1 month before the wedding...after alterations, I picked it up on the way to the rehearsal!

i saw my dress on a website of the designer and fell in-love. went to the bridal shop, and they didn't have one there, the style was out. so they actually had to MAKE the dress and i had to pay for it outright. so i was going crazy because i wasn't sure if i wanted to spend all of this money on a dress, when i didn't even know what it looked like! what would i do if i hated it???

so the dress came in and a few weeks later(the place is about 45 minutes from where i live) i went and tried it on and i STILL loved it! it was even better than it was in the pictures! so i got REALLY lucky! and i've looked at other dresses too, and they do NOTHING for me. everytime i'm like "nope, my dress is STILL better!" lol.

i did a similar thing with my prom dress. i saw a picture in a magazine, said "That's the dress i want" and got it. i think i have a good eye for those things i guess!

I bought my dress in the "destination" section of my wedding boutique partically because I didn't want to carry a large poofy dress there and back, and also because the time of year we got married (Sept.) was very hot - so less was definately more. I bought the 2nd dress I tried on. It was a size 6 when I bought it, and I had to have it cut down to a 2, have the straps removed, etc -but I knew it had loads of potential. I didn't really fall in love with it until I went to the final fitting.
