Dress question

I know a lot of little girls wear princess dresses to the parks. I don't know if dd, age 4, will want to--she's capricious on attire.

I have noticed when she wears longer (say to her lower calf) length dresses they interfere with playing. For example they make it harder for her to climb things at playgrounds. So I try to buy knee length or shorter dresses for everyday wear--she wears leggings with them.

Do the princess dresses pose those problems at the parks? Get caught on things or make it hard to get in and out of rides or play on the Swiss Family Robinson a Treehouse, etc, etc?

I have seen some "everyday" princess dresses on Etsy that don't seem to be full length and maybe those would be a good idea? I'm sure they would make them even shorter for me. . . . .

I have never seen one of the traditional bought princess dresses that are any shorter than mid-calf. Im sure you could have them made at whatever length you want but then you have to deal with her showing her underwear when he climbs in or out of rides or enjoys herself on the playground. This bothers some parents and not others so its how you feel about it. You could also put bike shorts on under them if that is an issue for you. Perhaps a bit less costume type sun dress with matching shorts would be a good match for her.

I love those "everyday" dresses! They are pretty simple to sew as well!! I'm not sure about the ease of wearing a princess dress all day at Disney... all I know is that my daughter wore hers all day without a single complaint at age two & four and I'm fairly certain will do the same now at age seven :lmao:

They are cute, aren't they? Wish I could sew, but I really can't. There are other sellers with similar products, that's just the first one that came up when I was looking for a link for this thread.

Thanks for telling me about your daughter's experience!

Disney does make a pack of five princess dresses - Cinderella, sleeping beauty, belle, rapunzel and I can't remember the last one. It includes some accessories. They are shorter.

My girls (4 & 7) had no problems wearing princess dresses around the parks. I think the key is that they have to WANT to wear the dressses. If they WANT to wear the dresses, they will make it a pleasant experience for themselves.

To explain further, we just got back this week, so we were there in the heat and humidity of June. While there were days that we went to the parks and my girls wore t-shirts and shorts and complained about how hot they were, the days that they wore their princess dresses (including a long sleeve Elsa dress and a very full Sophia dress) I didn't hear one bit of complaining about how hot it was because they were doing something that they wanted to do.

Also, while we didn't go in the treehouse, we didn't have any problems with the dresses walking around the parks (except my 4 year old HATED when she was called princess, and wanted everyone to know that she was just in a costume) or getting on/off rides. We let them carry on as normal with the dresses on and they caused no issues at all.

Great! Thank you.

I'm honestly not sure what she will want to wear. I think I will wait until closer to our trip to decide what to do about dresses/clothes for her. I can't ask her what she wants ahead of time because the trip is a surprise. Plus I have ordered clothes for her before triple checking that she actually wants and will wear them only to have her try to change her mind after something has arrived. Sigh.

Part of what made me think of this is that I noticed dd had a little trouble climbing a ladder into a fort at a friend's birthday party recently. She was wearing a longer dress that she had chosen for the party. She didn't complain, but she also only went up the ladder once and it was clearly a bit of a challenge. Dh and I both watched her all the way up because we were a little concerned that she was going to get her foot caught in the dress and fall.

But I have never worn a dress of any kind at disney world so it's a little hard for me to envision whether that kind of situation actually comes up.

We only go over the summer. Those dresses are HOT!

So, when my girls were young enough to dress up, we would put one over my daughter in the lobby of Aukeraus or 1900 Park Fare, over her shorts and T shirt. Then, after dinner, off it would come.

My concern is the heat as well. My dd will be turning 5 and on her birthday we have an appointment at BBB and CRT afterwards. I got her a cute minnie sundress to wear around the park, but I will probably bring her "Punzel" dress, her favorite princess, for her to wear for her birthday lunch with Cinderella. She doesn't wear her dresses for a long period of time, so I don't think she'll want to do it in the park either. Kohls has some really cute disney/minnie cloths.

This is exactly what we did when my daughter turned 5 in the parks. She became Ariel at the BBB with dress and all (it was July), then we went straight next door to CRT for lunch. She wore the dress for maybe another hour after lunch then changed. I had brought some other clothes with us. But she kept the hairdo in all night! We're headed back in 2 days for birthday number #8 and this is the first year we won't be going to BBB....end of an era!

I think she'll wear what she wants to wear and be happy with it, no matter the restrictions on movement. My daughter likes to wear a "down dress" (full length) as often as possible, and she doesn't care about it being hot or harder to climb/move. But if your daughter is happy with a shorter dress, go that route. It'd be cheaper than buying a $70 dress at the parks anyway.
