dress on 7 day cruise

My family is going on our first Disney cruise July 12, 2003. The information on line and in the brochures Disney sent all say a 7 day cruise has 2 formal nights 1 semi formal and 4 casual nights, one of which is tropical dress. I looked over some of the trip reports however and there only seems to be 1 formal night. The night of the Captain's gala, and 1 semi formal night...help what do I pack?

You will have one semi-formal and one formal night. If you plan on dining at Palo you'll want to pack for that as well. Most men seem to wear either a suit or a sport coat and dress slacks there, although it's not uncommon to see tuxes, even on non-formal night. On formal and semi-formal nights it's those attires in all the restaurants, including Palo (but not the buffet of course, that is always casual, although I think they discourage bathing suits that don't at least have a coverup).

Most people dress up a little more for Lumieres. It used to be jacket requested for gentlemen, but that has changed. A lot of men still wear a collared shirt or jacket though.

Anne is correct. There is one formal night and one semi-formal night. On these nights (especially formal night) you'll see everything from Tux's, to suits, to more casual (which in my opinion looked out of place). Many people still dress up a little more for Lumieres than the others.

We asked for a rotation that had us in Lumieres for formal and semi-formal night which worked out great. We also booked Palo for semi-formal night which was nice. That way we only had two really dress-up nights and the rest were more casual.

No matter what restaurant you're in for formal and semi-formal it will be great. We were in Parrot Cay for both and it was like prom night! All themed in that wonderful tropical mode and everyone dressed up. (Ok, almost everyone - there were a few who didn't). For the most part the men were in tuxes or dark suits for formal night. Very few sportcoats seen on the 6/21.

My DH had his own tux and wore it both nights - plain black accessories on formal night, silver Mickey print on semi-formal. Rented for 15 yo DS and he opted to leave the studs out, no tie on Semi-formal night - looked great and saw several other young men similar.

One thing that was pretty cool - DD & I wore true gowns for formal night and the servers made a really big deal about it. Even several of the head servers came over. For us it was a matter of going along with what our "host" requested because it is fun! Disney goes to so much effort to theme everything through that we like to "play along".

The suggested dress at Palo is simply "jacket recommended." Palo is not a formal attire restaurant (unless it's a semi-formal or formal night, or you want to dress formally).

Palo is a dressy place without children, so you'll probably want to dress up. A suit and tie is fine; a sportcoat over a polo shirt is fine too. There's nothing wrong with wearing a tux there, if that's your preference. And men aren't turned away if they choose not to wear any coat at all.
