What is the dress code like on rci? We're doing a 7 day eastern on Oasis. On disney we observed that the code was relaxed, unenforced and often ignored. What's the standard like for Oasis?

Much the same on RCCL ships, while it is frowned upon not to dress up on formal nights, there are still those that will not and do not. They do ask that you not wear bikini tops and shorts to dinner. We like to dress up and have a nice night on the formal evenings, it is kinda fun.

I wish they would enforce it better but I understand why they don't. It's easier to let them go and not make an issue out of it. People already complain about small things. That would just give them another.

On DCL shorts are officially allowed now but even before kids and teens wore shorts. Do you see shorts on young men in the MDr on Royal Caribbean on the casual nights? (nice dress shorts) My 14 year old would prefer nice shorts and a collard shirt for dinner.

a bit of googling does show that people do wear nice shorts to the MDR, I personally wouldn't notice if someone did. I would like to hear from someone who's actually been there though.

While shorts technically are not allowed in the main dining room, it's not enforced. We cruised on the Independence in February and the people who actually followed the dress code were in the minority. I saw several people in athletic shorts and cutoff t-shirts, yoga pants, etc. It was a big difference from the previous RC cruises we were on a few years ago. Maybe another frequent RC cruiser can comment if that's the new norm or if our cruise was an isolated case.

We got dressed up each nice, and especially so for our formal nights. Our tablemates weren't as dressed up as we were, but it made no difference. The teen son of the family was going to skip dinner at the MDR on formal nights, mentioned it to our server the night before, and the server INSISTED he show up in whatever he was going to wear. He had a nice, ironed, oversized button-down shirt, and decent jeans, and it was just fine.

This is good to know. We're planning on flying down and luggage space is becoming a premium.

Thanks everyone. Some of those traveling with me are resistant to bringing jackets, slacks, dresses etc and I would hate to tell then they HAVE to only to find that the majority of guests are more relaxed. Still I think nice shorts and sundresses or capris are the minimum. I do agree with flying its just not practical to bring formal wear with the different shoes and all. I am happy that DCL officially allows shorts and if most wear shorts on RC then I wished their material would just say so.

I wouldn't mind wearing the clothes, but at $25 for the first bag and $35 to $75 for the second, I just don't want to haul them.

I dont know whether it is allowed or not allowed, but I wore shorts into the MDR. It seems like this is an internet generated controversy, because it doesnt seem like anyone in the dining room actually gives a hoot whether you wear shorts or not.

Good to know, I suspect as long as your wearing clean decent shorts and a nice shirt it'll be fine.
