Dress code for kids on casual nights

I am looking for input about how my 2 DS and DD need to dress for dinner. Any chance my boys can get away with wearing dress shorts and dress shirts or should they wear pants? My kiddies are 9, 7 and 4 and I am looking to have a great vacation without any incident of frustration on their part.

We had the girls wear cute lillte summer dresses and the boys wear a collared polo shirt and kacki pants. They changed after dinner if they were going back to the club.

On both our cruises the kids followed the dress code, just as the adults did, dress pants/polos or cute little dresses for dinner. None of them seemed to mind at all, as they seemed to be having the time of their lives. Why even put the shorts idea in their heads..tell them pants is the way it is..or stay home.

Trust me you will DEFINITELY see kids in shorts at dinner, and not shorts and nice polo shirts either as you are considering dressing your kids. Shorts and t-shirts, etc. I think it will be a decision for you to make, but after the first night I was not as strict with my DS.

I say let the kids wear shorts in the more casual restaurants (Parrot Cay and Animators). Nobody will notice or care.

Thanks for your input. I would love to dress my boys up EVERY night - I just don't want any arguements. My 7 yr old loves to dress up, my daughter loves to dress up, my 9 year old is a string bean and his dress pants are huge on him (so they can be long enough), so he is never quite comfortable. I just want smiling faces as often as possible.

I don't think shorts are a big deal on the kids. My son was wearing a tank top and shorts in the Oceaneer's club when they paged us in the middle of dinner to go pick him up, so he came to dinner very casual and he didn't look out of place (this was in Animator's Palate).
