Can anyone help me pick a room for a Christmas 2017 cruise we are hoping to book.

We are looking at an ocean view but unsure of the difference between cat 8 and 9 and also whether aft or forward is better. ( midship not available)

One more question is which deck would be better for us?

Thank you all in advance

Personally, I prefer aft, as it is a quick trip to cabanas, the drink station, aquaduck, splash area, and water slide. I love the quick coffee access in the morning.

If you are doing more adult things, forward would probably better.

Although I must say, it can be a long walk aft if you are carrying a sleeping 4 year old after the evening show is over.

Which cruise?

The title says "Dream"
I asked "Which cruise?", not "Which boat?"

Knowing the date of the cruise would help me search & see if certain cabin types are available.

Read carefully before you post.

Well, OP was just asking for help in picking a room. They want some help in figuring out what the difference is between room categories, and deck locations.

Not really asking for specific room recommendations.

I said above "to see if certain cabin types are available". Some cabin types, like 8A's (the double porthole cabins on Dream), can sell out very quickly.

But, maybe, OP is just wanting to know the difference in the types of room, in order to figure out themselves what cruise to take, based on what room(s) are available.
If you actually tried to help the OP, you might find out what info they want. Maybe you could even put your energy into helping the OP, instead of criticizing another poster's attempt to help.

This is ridiculous, and obviously a misunderstanding on my part. Good grief. None of this bicker bicker is helping the OP....

FWIW: I had room 7019/7017 (Forward) and they were great (Inside Cabin though). Not much movement, fit 4 in a room comfortably.

In the first post, OP stated what information they were looking for:

"unsure of the difference between cat 8 and 9"
"also whether aft or forward is better"
"which deck would be better for us?"

I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on cat 8 rooms vs cat 9. I leave such descriptions to those who have been in both.

Please don't get mad at me. I was just responding to your fairly snippy post "I asked "Which cruise?", not "Which boat?"

I agree, I didn't mean to get anything started.

Sorry OP.

Now back to our regular programming.

I haven't yet seen you even respond to the OP. At all. Just criticizing me, continually, which isn't helping the OP. It's my job to not mind the carping? I'll sign off as this **** doesn't help the OP.

I appreciate all help, I'm sorry if my question has caused a fuss.

The sailing we are looking at is the 18th December 4 night.

I guess I should be more specific. We are looking for a good size room as travelling with 2 kids age 16 and 12.

Ideally less movement would he ideal but I do understand its a boat lol!

Then just what I should be looking at category wise and what difference it makes

Thank you again everyone

I'm the same way as Shanti, my gut it to go an search the cruise so I can see which rooms are available because I enjoy planning around available rooms like that, I think it's fun... anyways I like aft OP if midship isn't available

I've had a look and can see what's available but don't understand the difference to know which to book.

Aft or forward?

Cat 8 or 9 and then there are letters?!

Deck 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9?

it looks like the deluxe family room might be the biggest size, I'm not good with the differences between stateroom categories either, I think the lower the number means more space and more $$ so I am guessing Cat 8 might be better? I found this on their website for extra help:

https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/faq/staterooms/stateroom-categories/

Also I personally like higher decks over lower decks, just personal preference

Thank you so much, I shall have a read through.

Category 8 is slightly larger than category 9. Some category 8 have an additional Murphy bed directly in front of the window, but not all. If that is important, you should check with room reports on specific rooms. Category 8 also have a round tub in the bathroom with a rain shower head. The category 8 portholes are also larger than the category 9 ones.

The exception to the above are category 8A. They are far bigger, have two portholes, but no split bathroom.

The letters behind the numbers indicate location on the ship. Category 9D and 9C are obstructed view portholes. As far as I know, they are all in the very front and the wall is at an angle. This gives you slightly more floor space. I would recommend checking room reports on these as some seem to be better and bigger than others. 9B is on deck 2, 9A on higher decks. With 8D to 8B it is just the decks that make the difference.

All forward staterooms are close to the theatre and the adult pool, aft would be closer to restau rants and Cabana. I think for a family with kids, aft would be better than forward.

As to which deck is good, I think everyone has their own preferences. A lot of people like decks that have no public areas above or below. For kids deck 5 might be good as it is the same floor as the kids clubs. Deck 2 is usually considered to be good if you want less movement. Deck 2 9B are also the only midship ocean view rooms.

We had a cat 8c which is a family ocean view room. It had the bed that came Down from the ceiling and the bed in the wall that was near the large porthole window. There was only 3 of us but wanted the extra space and it was fab!! We chose aft as it was so close to the drink station and went for deck 8 so we only had cabins above and below us to minimise any noise. It was perfect for us and would happily have that room again. We Definately under utilised room service so if you do choose a room further away from the drink station don't forget you can get your morning coffee brought directly to you - on our second cruise we used to put the breakfast order door hanger out just for coffee, juice and pastries so we could get ready leisurely for our day. I'll see if I can locate a pic.
