Dream Job at WDW?

I would either be a captain of one of the boats going back and forth from the MK and the fort or work at the Haunted Mansion.

Ok TCD, here goes.

Do the buses assigned as Yellow, Orange and Purple not leave the Fort all day?
FW buses only make runs at the Fort.

How long do these drivers work per day?
I'm assuming that the Fort bus shifts are the same as all the other bus shifts, a minimum of 6 hours and usually no more than 10 hours.

I have seen them switch out drivers at the Settlement as well as the Outpost, but I have never noticed a pattern.
There is no pattern when switching drivers. Drivers get a break generally every 3 or 4 hours.

Are the Fort drivers different from the regular drivers?
No

Do you ever get to drive in the Fort?
No, I don't like doing the same route over and over again.

I know that the Orange bus used to go from the Fort to Wilderness Lodge and back from the Settlement. But, recently, I saw a Yellow bus do the same. How is this determined?
It's based on need. The only thing certain about the bus system is the uncertainty.

As for the buses that leave the Fort, I thought it used to be that the bus that went to Epcot, for example, would go to Epcot, drop guests at the FW bus stop there, and then return to the Fort/WL. But, now-a-days, it seems like we get dropped at a random bus stop, and then the driver is assigned to pick up guests at another resort's bus stop, and take them to their resort.
Before the current automated system, buses did have dedicated routes, but now after completing a route, we call in and get the next one, which except for peak times, is determined by the automated system.

Do you know where you will be going for each run, or is this assigned on the fly?
We operate out of one of the four Hubs all day. We know what the next route is only after completing a route. Towards the end of the run they'll be a call in point at all the Hubs. That's when we call in and get the computer code for the next run. That's what determines where we drop off in most cases. In the mornings though, we'll get a route that has two destinations. At that point unless the dispatcher tells you or you've memorized all the routes, and there are thousands, the computer will tell us what the first stop is but not the second until we reach the first one.

It seems amazingly complicated to me. But, it actually works pretty well.
Because it's automated it's pretty straight forward and it does work pretty well.

I would love to talk to one of your parents to ask them what were you like when you were a little kid.

All this stuff fascinates me too, especially the bus routes. I know it's all computer generated, and lots of it is on the fly, but if a guest looks closesly they can see some patterns.

For example this past February, we stayed at POFQ for a few days. On one morning, we had breakfast at WL, another morning we had breakfast at GF. We took the bus to MK, and when I got off, I noticed the sign said DH WL. (I have pretty much figured out that means Dead Head Wilderness Lodge) I asked the driver if he was going to WL and that we were going there for breakfast and could we stay on. He got permission, and we did. When we got off the bus, I noticed it said DTD. I was pretty sure I remembered that WL and GF shared a bus to DTD.

A couple of days later, we had breakfast at GF. We once again took the bus to MK, and the drivers sign said the same thing. Once again, we were allowed to stay on, and were dropped at GF after a stop at WL.

So based on that, unless something unusual happens, it appears that in the mornings the MK bus from POFQ is then routed to WL/GF, then on to DTD.

I have often been tempted to just hop on a bus from a random resort in the morning and ask to just stay on and see what type of routing it has.

How did you ever figure out that DH meant deadhead?

Do you know what it actually means?

Your theory regarding the MK bus pattern is correct, you're amazing. It is a standard route in the morning. Because it's really slow in the AM at DTD, their buses help out other hubs. The DTD bus was sent to pick up at POFQ for MK, then DH to the WL/GF and return to DTD. Even though it went to MK, it was still a DTD bus. I've done that run many times. What I don't understand is why, if the bus was going to the WL/GF, did the driver need permission to take you? I just go ahead and do it. But that all changes later in the day when DTD is in full swing. And that bus will do that run only once. It'll be another bus the next time. So remember just when you think you've got it figured out, it's different.

You should just hop on a bus sometime in the AM and see what happens. It's like a fine swiss watch. But you don't have to ask the driver for permission. Just tell them what you're doing so they know you're not getting off right away. We're happy to do it.

I get nervous when sneaky guys like TCD start asking specific questions about transportation routes.

Smart man.

The only thing certain about the bus system is the uncertainty.

I would love to talk to one of your parents to ask them what were you like when you were a little kid.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions!

I think the first statement I quoted from you sums up what I have figured out about the bus transportation system.

But, all things considered, I think it works extremely well.

I think if you asked my parents, they would tell you the same thing as Mrs. TCD: I was and still am a big PITA. ;)

I have often been tempted to just hop on a bus from a random resort in the morning and ask to just stay on and see what type of routing it has.

I really like that idea!

I may try it myself one day.

What I would like to figure out is shortcuts.

Like, if the DD bus from WL is going to GF first, then maybe that would be a good shortcut to the MK, or the Contemporary Resort, or even the TTC (like if that bus came before the MK bus did), or if I was at the Fort but had a dining reservation at the GF- maybe that is how I would choose to go.

Or, if the Orange Bus at FW is the one that always goes to WL, and I'm staying in the 2000 loop and want to go to WL, maybe I would walk over to an Orange Bus stop instead of getting on a Purple one.

Thanks, again, for taking the time to share your knowledge! And watch it- you may find me riding around on one of your buses all day.

Last night DH told me he would want to be the guy that hoses down the site and preps for the next camper. It is all early in the day work - has to be completed by check in time...

Dead Head means running empty?? Isn't that why the buses don't just run in circles, to eliminate running empty as much as possible :-)

I want to sell balloons on Main Street!! :flower3:

Imagneer I would love to create new rides.

After years of trying to get an interview to become an Imagineer, actually it's called Ride & Show, and not getting one, they finally called and wanted to interview me, I said thanks but no thanks, not interested any more. So, if you have the right background and willing to wait around, it's possible.

Dought my background is right. I am a plumber by trade. But I love design and fabrication. It's fun to drag out the welding machine and start burning some metal together you feel good when you look at what you built.

That's the job my DH and I want to do. No Stress!!!

And is my understanding is correct,,you can't weigh a pound over 145.

or maybe it's 120,:confused3

or maybe it's 130 ??

I dont know,, nevermind.

If you were told that you could pick any job - not behind a desk - at WDW what would it be?

When I was young I thought I would love driving the monorail, then I wanted to be in the parades as a dancer... now I think I would like to be a captain of one of the boats going to and from the Fort/MK! - do women do that? I have only seen men?

Actually, I am seriously considering doing the boat transportion on Bay Lake & Seven Seas Lagoon when I retire. Just the type of low stress job I need. Sometimes redundancy is bliss.
