Dramatic much?

Much to do about nothing. The man is old and has been doing this for a very long time, maybe its just time to let someone else do it. It wasn't a paid position and they are giving him some, albeit meaningless title and a VIP seat. Its not like he's being thrown in the trash bin.

I'm sure he was disappointed. But feeling like committing suicide?

I imagine at his age and tenure being replaced can be a very hard thing. This is an 89 year old man who has been doing this for 60 years. At that point it is apart of your identity. I can imagine it was very hard at first and yes maybe thinking about suicide is a large jump but perhaps this is what he has been looking forward too every 4 years and now he's been replaced so he had a moment of who am I?

He lost his wife about a month ago, he was devastated and preparing for the inauguration was the thing that kept him going. He got an email that said No Thanks and that was it, not even an in person explanation, so yeah he was sucker punched. He had been doing this since Eisenhower and at 89 he might just be that upset about it. He deserved a little respect. Not an afterthought.

It was handled badly but that seems to be the new norm. At least he didn't learn about it in a Tweet.
I must have missed where it says he just lost his wife? Doing this for as long as he had he should have none that with each new president that he could be done.

That story didn't but there have been interviews and stories that mentioned it. CNN maybe?...can't remember, but my local news also talked about it.

I think it was just that there was no warning and he was already in preparation, just that email all of the sudden. From the stories it sounded like no one associated with it from the parade side had any idea or I'm sure they wouldn't have had him preparing if they had known he wasn't going to announce it. He was a gentleman and wished the new guy luck and hoped he did a great job.

Well, for many, many years it has been a lovely non-political tradition.

He was indeed a gentleman. I wish him the best!

okay, I thought I was going crazy about missing the wife passing away.

The first thing I teach in my Suicide Awareness and Prevention class is to never belittle what others is going through. We have no idea what is going on in their mind, heart or life to judge someone and anything can cause someone to have a tipping point. It may be considered trivial to us but a HUGE thing to someone else.

I wish him well as do you. I just think tradition change so new tradition can start.
But why? Usually there's a catalyst. For example: I stopped going to my grandparents house for Christmas Eve when my grandmother had a stroke and moved into a nursing home.
This gentlemen seemed healthy, and wanted to do it. There's no real reason for it. Was he doing a bad job?

My take is that he felt like it was a privilege and something he loved doing, so I'm sure his feelings were hurt by being replaced. I caught a snippet of his interview on CNN, and while he seems like a charming man, his voice is not booming and strong like I'm sure it might have been at one point. He IS 89 years old, for heaven's sake. I hesitate saying that though since I'm the big meanie who hates old people, lol, based on responses I got on my thread about my FIL. I certainly don't think he was being overly dramatic, and from the couple of seconds I saw on TV, he seemed very sweet and sincere, and certainly not suicidal!
