Drama at Subway

Something just happened that made me feel very uncomfortable and question myself. I really need some honest feedback.

I had ordered a pizza and two subs at Subway. There was one girl with gloves preparing my order. At the same time there was a girl at the cash register ringing up the order for several young kids. After she was finished at the cash register she went over to the oven without washing her hands or putting on gloves and was going to handle my pizza since the other girl was busy preparing my subs. I didn't want a pizza that was touched by someone who had just handled money that had been handled by a bunch of kids. It's flu season! I was especially concerned about the Norovirus. I then asked her not to touch my pizza with her bare hands. She then glared at me as if I had told her to do a song and dance while delivering my order and make it snappy! She was so rude I feel uncomfortable going back in.

Was I being unreasonable? I seriously was shocked anyone would be so careless when so many illnesses are going around. I don't even touch my own food before washing my hands. I was as polite as possible though. She just made me feel like I was being a diva.

I've never heard of pizza at Subway. :confused3

Nope, not a diva.
Touching money then touching food with no handwashing in between. Bleah...

You were the customer and having your food prepared in a sanitary manner was your right.

They have them at some of the Subways around us. They're pre-made cheese pizzas that you can add toppings to before they bake them in the toaster oven.

As far as the OP goes, I don't think you're out of line asking for the person to put gloves on. IIRC, the people making subs usually put a clean pair of food-safe gloves on before making each sub, since they handle all the ingredients with their hands.

Did she glare and then touch the pizza? Glare and then wash her hands? Glare and then wait and let someone else touch the pizza?

Subway is a franchise. Simply not going back punishes the franchise owner, not the specific employee. I'd either get over it, or complain to the franchise owner. Just not going back doesn't solve anything.

I had a similar experience a while back. At McD's i saw the cashier blow her nose and come up to the register to take my order. While she was ringing in my food i said "can you wash your hands before handling my food please?". She said "of course!", like that was her intention all along (YEAH RIGHT!). I dont care where i am, if you dont wash your hands after doing something disgusting, or after handling cash, I think i have a right to speak up. My money, my food, my health. OP, I wouldnt worry about it. If you dont feel comfy with it, then dont go back.

You were not out of line and what she did is against food handling rules. I would have gotten a manager and maybe even make a corporate call. that is just disgusting

We order pizza for DD at Subway all the time and honestly, I've never had an employee touch the pizza after it comes out of the oven. :confused3

They slide it off the tray from the oven into the cardboard box, they cut it and then close the box. No touching involved.

Some Subways have pizza. I would have said the same thing basically, that's just icky. I do think you should let the franchise owner/manager know as well.

I don't blame you. Had she touched my pizza, I would have insisted that they make me a new one. Either way, I would report it to the manager/franchisee.

things like this always make me wonder what goes on in restaurants where the kitchen/prep area is not visible! You did the right thing, she surely was not following protocol. Money is so dirty, but even if she was not handling money, she should still wash before preparing food.

I was at the grocery store a while ago and the cashier had on rubber gloves, the disposable thin white kind. Anyway, the fingertips were black from handling money. She said she wore them to keep her hands clean. Then I observed her reaching into an M&M bag and pop a few in her mouth without removing the glove! I wanted to tell her so bad that it did no good to use the gloves if you were just going to eat with them on! Oh well......

Disappointing lack of drama! Where's the "I pay your salary"? The storming out in a huff? The reporting to the principal/hospital board/bank manager/licensing committee?

I'm just not sure the Community board is the right place for this post. :rotfl::rotfl:

Our Subway stores have pizza, also.

OP, you were not wrong to stop her. It doesn't matter where the money came from, it's nasty. You don't know where all it's been and how many hands have touched it. Even if it is crisp, you know at least a teller and the person paying have touched it. I've been in the restroom with people who you would think would be meticulous about washing. I'm amazed at the ones who believe sticking their hands under the running water makes them clean. Some don't even bother with that. Then again, I turn on the water, get the soap, wash past my wrists, under my nails, rince, use the paper towel to dry, and turn off the water. I then use the same one or another one to open the door. So if you see someone walking around with a paper towel at WDW or anywhere else, it may be me. I won't throw it on the floor like some do, but I don't like to open a door without it. I had something similar. The girl was trying, but she needed more training. I saw a young girl running a register at San Francisco Bread Co. who was wearing gloves. Unfortunately, I saw her walk over and start to get someone a muffin with the same gloves. I was nice and friendly, but I had to stop her. She was not ugly about it, because I think she just didn't know any better.

I was floored to read (think it may have been here on the Dis) that it's allowable by the health department to handle money then food without having to wash hands first. Don't like this *at all* but apparently it's the law. :confused3 Anyone hear something different?

This. There is no need to physically touch the pizza once it is cooked. I worked at a movie theater that sold pizza. We would put gloves on to put it in the oven, but not when we took it out. We never even came close to touching the pizza.

Totally off topic but talking about getting pizza in odd places my daughter got one at Auntie Ann’s pretzel store and I have to admit it was one of the best pizzas I have ever had!

This was my thought. She would not be touching the pizza, or any food, to take it out of the oven--so using gloves, etc s not require. This is one of the reasons the work is split along the lines that it is.
