we found out we are expecting twins when we went for my amnio on halloween. My dr. wasn't experienced doing twin amnios so referred me to a specialist. My office set everything up. A week before my appt. I called the specialist's office to find out how this works with insurance...do they take our plan, etc. They told me that someone there calls the insurance company and gets approval, and only if there was an issue would I hear back. Out of curiousity I checked my insurance plans webesite and the dr. I was seeing was listed as in network for me. All is well, right?

Didn't hear anything from the dr.s office so went last tuesday for my appointment. No less than 6 women in the office told me that my insurance plan (not carrier, but specific plan within the carrier) wasn't one they accepted or they were a part of, or something like that. I was so stressed about the amnio to begin with, this was so unexpected since I did my homework ahead of time, etc. Finally they tracked down the woman who called to get approval and in big red letters in my file it said approved! Dh was on the phone at the same time with our insurance co. who said, yes, the dr. is in network and there was no problem at all. This took at least 45 minutes to get thru to the right woman.

Well, they had to reschedule me because Baby A (the boy) was a bit small, or his sac wasn't an ideal size or position or something like that. So I am scheduled this friday. I called today to make sure things would be smoother. This time a different dr. will be doing it, and I checked on the website under my particular plan and he is listed. So all should be well, right?

NO! The office again is trying to tell me they are out of network for my policy. The woman I dealt with at the end last time wasn't available and I was told I would hear from her by tomorrow. In the meantime I called my insurer again to find out what the deal is and I was told this dr. is in network, that there are no problems at all, and they have no idea why this office would be telling me otherwise.

So frustrating! It sounds like everything is okay from our end, but still want to make sure I get the big red approval on my forms at the office. The person I talked to at my insurer gave me the physicians website so the office can check on friday if they need to, and they will be open on friday for phonecalls. But I still can't believe how difficult this has been! The dr. from last tuesday has already been processed and paid in full! Talk about fast! My god.

Has anybody else experienced anything like this? I've had issues with a different insurance company before, but this time the insurer is being awesome, its the dr.s office that is driving me nuts.

I work in medical billing (400+ doctors). That happens all the time. Personally, I went round and round between my insurance company and the doctor's office for a year before someone at the insurance company told me the charge was coded wrong. I called the doctor's office and told them, they changed the code and the insurance company paid. It's ridiculous sometimes. No wonder insurance and medical costs are so high.
