Dr. "FAtkins"?

I eliminated refined sugar, white flour, and transfats from my daily diet. I eat mainly boneless, skinless chicken, turkey, lean pork, and fish. Occasional red meat, maybe once every 2 weeks, rare to almost no processed meat. I stick mainly to low glycemic fruits and vegetables, which include berries, some melons, green leafy veggies, cruciferous veggies, and again, on occasion, a higher glycemic choice such as sweet potato. I do snack on small amounts of heart-healthy nuts, use olive oil or macadamia nut oil for cooking. I also use approximately one stick of butter per week, avoiding the transfats of margarines. When I choose to eat bread, I pick one made with natural whole grain. I eat plain yogurt daily for its benefits, and sometimes eat small amounts of aged, nonprocessed cheese.

This is my typical diet too. I basically don't eat junk food now. Tell me what is so dangerous about this?

You think not eating twinkies and cheetos is going to kill me?

I think that people who like to go on and on about how unhealthy and how terrible Atkins (and other low carb programs are) are finding their comfort zone about what they "know" to be "proper nutrition" threatened.

Bingo!

That was me, too, until I broke down and read the Atkins book. I modified my own plan -- can't follow his diet to the letter so I am sort of in between Atkins and South Beach -- and once I got over the initial hump of less carb and more fat, I feel better than I have in years. I just couldn't get past the "low fat is the only way to go" concept to dieting, but when I really read what Dr. Atkins had to say it does make sense.

YES -- you can go without high 'empty carb' foods FOREVER and have it work for YOU. No one has to have sugar or white flour to live a healthy life. BUT, you do have to have healthy fats to survive. Most people on low carb eat a very balanced diet of lean meats, lots of healthy high fiber veggies and high fiber grains.

I just had a wonderful lunch! A chicken cheesesteak on a wrap that has 14 grams of fiber and only 3 grams of fat. [wrap only info]. Dinner will be chicken and some high fiber veggies and a salad. I am eating so much healthier now than I ever had!

I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the Atkins diet. I attempted it at the beginning of the month, and while I started losing weight in the beginning, I GAINED almost 10 pounds. YUCK! I don't know why that happened, as I followed it to a "T". On top of it, I didn't feel well over all from eating so much meat and cheese.

Now my boyfriend, who has stayed on the diet for awhile now, has LOST about 12 pounds. I just can't do it myself. He's happy with his weight loss, but I'm just gonna stick to no soda, bread, candy for now.

I don't know much about Dr. Atkins or his diet, but I do know that it is generating big business. I saw a commercial for Donatos pizza advertising low carb pizza (pizza without the crust).

Whatever diet works for you, keep it up. People should monitor their health no matter how they intend to diet.

In the January issue of Men's Fitness Magazine, there is a small blurb reporting that both The Mayo Clinic and Harvard University have done studies on the Atkins diet and have found no long term ill effects...even found it to raise HDL levels (the good cholesterol that keeps the bads ones in check)....then there was that Duke University study done that showed the same results.
