are any of the venues at downtown disney suitable for an evening visit with two children under 12?

yes...
besides the stores and restaurants, there's DisneyQuest, Cirque de Soleil and the movie theatres...
that's all i can think of, but i've probably left something out...

All three are quite expensive....DisneyQuest is included in some tickets (we always make a point of buying tickets that include it since my kids like to go there several times when we visit)..

Cirque de Soleil is also very expensive, but really quite worth it....the staging and talent is quite extraordinary...

the movies are also very expensive, but maybe they're also expensive in the UK...i don't know....where we live it's not so bad, so we had major sticker shock when we saw the movie prices....

if i were to pick one of those, i think i'd go with Cirque de Soleil...
it's the most unusual.....we've seen it 3 times (plus we saw both shows in las vegas)....

There are lots of restaurants and shops that I am sure your children will love. We could spend hours there. You could get some lovely ice cream at Ghirardelli's and watch the world go by

There are three area's of Downtown Disney..

<b>Marketplace</b>

Shops like World of Disney, Pooh Corner and Disney at Home. You can dine at Rainforest Cafe, Mcdonalds and Fultons.

<b>Pleasure Island</b>

Shops like Suspended Animation and Mouse House and Clubs such as The Adventurers Club and The Comedy Warehouse.

<b>West Side</b>

Dining at Bongo's, Planet Hollywood and House of Blues. Entertainments such as Cirque du Soliel Show La Nouba and Disney Quest and guess what?? Shops such as Candy Cauldron and Virgin Megastore.

Our children (then 3 & 6) loved the Downtown Disney area. There is a nice little play area (free!) outside the Lego shop, and lots of Lego to play with too

Lots to see and do at DTD, we love it here (though we always spend too much money here!)

By UK standards ( well around here anyway ) the cinema is quite well priced and VERY comfortable/clean.

Some of the speciality stores might interest them. Hoi Poloi (sp?) has some really cute artwork and nicknacks. The magic shop can be good fun as well.

There are some nice restaurants down there as well. It's a nice place to take a wander about and plenty of things to look at. If DQ is included in your tickets it's certainly worth investigating for a couple of hours and then getting something to eat nearby. Cirque is an absolutely STUNNING show and while it's expensive it really is a great option for a special day/treat.
