Downloading Music - Help!

The recent discussions on the DIS about favorite songs prompted me to make a list of my all-time faves. I have 85 on my list so far. (Can you tell how busy I am at work today!?) Anyway, I want to download them and put them on CD’s and I don’t have a clue how to do it (and I want to do it legally). Can anyone recommend a good website?

We're looking for a "legal" site as well. We don't mind paying 99 cents a song or a monthly fee. Does anyone know of any music downloading sites that you pay for?

I use Kazaa. It's still legal because of the international laws. But you need to carefully hear the music first. Some downloads may have skips or early exits to the songs. However, it's a great way to download music for free......

Sorry, I do not know the website.

If you have Windows Media Player, there are links on the main page to pay for downloads. It usually allows you to download as much as you want to your PC, but limits the number of songs you can burn to your CD every month (I think the limit is 10 burns per month).

Check out Rhapsody !

And, a tip, just in case you didn't know. Each disc is burnable just once.... Even the rewritable ones... You can only burn music just once. So, pick the songs that you want to burn on each CD, then burn them onto the disc all at once....

Thanks for the help! I'll give these a try.

sncbird, I'll be happy to pay too, but $1/song is a little steep since I already have 85 songs! A low monthly or annual fee would be great, but free is even better!

How so?

We've been using WinMX. I don't know how different it is from any other services.

Will the RIAA ever be able to stop downloading? How is it different from dubbing video rentals or songs off the radio?

I think that Rhapsody is now $0.79 cents per song. This is because they are completely legal. They have agreements with virtually every major label, and I imagine that this involves paying royalties. It is a great site. You will find that most ANY song you want is there. But there may be some cases where the individual artists have not signed on to make their music available to 'burn' this way.

If I am guessing right, sites like KAZAA are more like huge internet sharing networks where all individual members can share material one-to-one, from their computer to yours. And, as mentioned, you would want to be careful about what you were actually getting. I am thinking that computer viruses would also be a concern. Sites like these are not companies or 'services' making music available, or selling music.

I will check out Rhapsody too - thanks for the info :teeth:
Can someone give me the link to the web-site? Thanks!!

So we can still use Kazaa and not get into trouble? DS asked me and I said we'd check into it.
