Oh my god! I was desperate to download some Disney fonts, and no matter how many times I read the instructions, I just wasn't gettting it.
That is until I decided to use DS Apple Computer :earseek:

My biggest problem with Microsoft is HOW do I FIND my downloads?

With the Mac,
It took all of three minutes and they were on his Font list. No zipping/ unzipping etc.
Now i'll try printing with his printer as well, Epson CX4600.
Not that 18 yr. old wants mom hanging in his room... thank goodness his shifts at work coincide with baby girls nap time :rotfl:

On a side note, wondering what everyone's favorite Printer is and Why
As well as camera.
Mother's day is a week away and gotta get shopping for my husband
:rotfl2: Kathy

Do you still need help with the Windows fonts? Or will just use the MAC from now on? I can help you if you want. If I take my time when writing out the instructions they should be understandable. That's part of what I used to do for my job...find problems & then write up instructions on how to recreate them....it works the same way for "how to do it" as for problems. Just let me know.

As far as printers...we're in the market for a new one ourselves. Are you looking for one that the MAC can use also or just the Windows machine?

We got DD a camera for Christmas but I dropped it in the car last Sunday trying to change the batteries & now it's not working. So I'm not sure I'd recommend it to you.

Deb! Thanks! Yes if you could please direct me in laymans terms I would be most appreciative! :goodvibes

Sorry about the camera! :sad2: Ouch! Any printer i get will have to be compatible with the Dell. or my Compaq laptop. The Mac is what I "play with" on occasion. The Laptopis my life line. The dell, as soon as I figure out what the heck "out of frequency" means and get that fixed, will be my "scraparea" computer. My family wants my scrap stuff out of the kitchen! :rotfl:

Thanks again, hope someone reads this and posts their camera/printer favs.
Kathy

Kathy - I'll write up the instructions & post them this morning.

About the "out of frequency"....just a guess, do you have a wireless network set up in your house? If so, are you a good distance from the hub? Or on another floor?

After reading your post last night I went back to check the camera again. It turns out that it just has poor instructions. The + - signs weren't visible (to my bad eyes) and the picture they paste in the battery compartment is evidently meant to show you which direction to put them in - not which end s/b up. :sad2: So it still works....I just had the batteries in backwards.

Good news/bad news.....good news: the camera works :) bad news: I missed taking pix at my ILs 50th Anniversary party. :(

OK I think this should do it. Please don't be offended if the instructions are too basic. I get requests from my clients for this type of thing often & I decided to save them this time. (I usually customize them for each person's ability.) Also, you're the guinea pig for this set of instructions. Please let me know if you run into any problems with them. I tried them myself, but at times I may have done something automatically without realizing it & therefore skipped a step. I’m assuming XP is the version of Windows you’re using. Let me know if that’s wrong. Oh - and I have broken them into a couple parts & will post each separately.

Downloading & unzipping new fonts

1. Locate a font you want to download & click on the link. A “File Download” window will open. Click “Save”.
2. “Save As” window opens. At the top of the window locate “Save in” and click on the ‘down arrow’ to find where that folder is located. (Windows defaults to {automatically uses} the last location you saved to.) Write this down or change it if you know how.
3. Click “Save”
4. Go to “Start” (where you turn off the computer) & choose “My Computer”. Starting with “Hard Disk Drives” – “Local Disk (C: )” double click on each icon in turn listed in the location you wrote down in step 2 until you get to the ZIP file you downloaded.
5. Double click on the file to open WinZip. (Hopefully this is already downloaded. Let me know if it isn’t.)
6. Click once on any TTF files that appear in the WinZip window & then click the “Extract” icon. The “Extract” window opens.
7. Check the “Extract to” location. If it is not the same as in step 2, write it down or change it if you know how.
8. Click “Extract”.
9. Close the WinZip window.

Locating & unzipping previously downloaded fonts

1. Go to “Start” (where you turn off the computer) & choose “Search”. A “Search Results” window will open.
2. Click “All files and folders”
3. In “All or part of the file name” type “ *.zip ” without the quotation marks.
4. Click “Search”
5. When the Search is completed, go to the menu and click “View” then choose “Details.”
6. Click the column header “In Folder” to sort the list by folder.
7. Double click on a ZIP file to open WinZip. (Hopefully this is already downloaded. Let me know if it isn’t. Ignore any fonts listed in “C:\Windows\Fonts” folder.) Either make note of the folders containing ZIP files or leave the “Search Results” window open for reference.
8. Click once on any TTF files that appear in the WinZip window & then click the “Extract” icon. The “Extract” window opens.
9. Check the “Extract to” location. If it is not the same as in step 5 of “Locating previously downloaded fonts” write it down or change it if you know how.
10. Click “Extract”.
11. Close the WinZip window.

Installing previously downloaded fonts

1. Go to “Start” & click “My Computer”
2. Double click “Hard Disk Drives” – “Local Disk (C: )”
3. Double click “Windows”
4. Double click “Fonts”
5. From the menu, click “File” & then “Install New Font”. The “Add Fonts” window opens.
6. In the lower left of this window is the “Folders” list. You need to navigate to the folder/s where your TTF files are located. (The files you “Extracted” in step 7.) Under the word “Folders:” is the default location – probably “c:\windows”. If your TTF files are in the “My Documents” folder for example, you need to double click on the “c:\” icon in the white area and then on the “My Documents” folder icon.
7. Once you have selected the folder with your TTF files, the “List of fonts:” area will start to populate with the font files. If you have a LOT of fonts in the folder selected, it could take a while. Just above the “Drives” selection area (center of “Add Fonts” window) a line appears to indicate progress: “Retrieving Font Names” and the percentage complete
8. Either select the font/s you want from the “List of fonts” area or click “Select All”.
9. Click OK to install the fonts. The “Install Font Progress” window opens.
10. If you see the “Windows Fonts Folders” window appear & the message “The xxxx(TrueType) font is already installed” click “Okay” not “Cancel”. It will just skip the font that’s already there & continue installing the rest. Choosing “Cancel” stops installing the entire list.
11. Repeat to look for & install TTF files if you might have already unzipped them or downloaded as a TTF file instead of a ZIP file. (It wouldn’t have been your choice, but some fonts are small enough that they’re not zipped.)

The fonts you’ve installed don’t usually appear in Word if the program was already open while you were installing the font. If it was open, just close it & re-open. The font should now be listed in the fonts list on your formatting bar.

Deb,

Thanks so much! I was too sick last night to try it.. I have bronchitis! Arghhh this ever changing weather it'll knock you out in a heartbeat.

Anyhow I am going to attempt to follow your very specific instructions! (Thank you again) later this evening. I'll let you know how it goes!
You have now become my official "Geek Squad" Will take payment in the form of Sizzix :rotfl2:
Kathy

Hey, I'm happy to help! :teeth: I don't get to play "geek" often enough anymore. Oddly enough, I actually enjoy it!

Deb! help!
I'm stuck at section 2 #5 I don't have an "in folder" in header.

And on #7 what is a TTF file?
Thanks! Sorry to be a pest!

Oops! One of those things I do without thinking. I edited the post to add a new step #6. You probably don't have any columns, do you? You need to change to the "Details" view to see the column headings.

Also, TTF stands for "True Type Font". Another thing I do without thinking. :sad2: For example, if your font is called "a bug's life" you should see "a bug's life (TrueType font)" once you get to the Windows/Fonts folder in the new step #7. It's just the type of font you usually use in Windows.

I downloaded them and even found them after I downloaded them - they all ended up on my desktop - and moved them to the fonts folder where the instructions said they belong. I still can't choose one of those fonts when I am in my Works document.
I haven't had time to try to do it again but plan to this coming weekend. Maybe there is another folder for Works that I need to move the fonts to. This is quite frustrating for me. I am a pc person and work on a pc about 7 hours a day but we have a mac at home because my husband uses it for his work and needed to have a mac. I don't really care that much if it is pc or mac as long as I can do what i need to do - most of the time I can but these fonts are driving me crazy.
Has anyone else run into this problem trying to get your fonts in a place on the mac where you can actually use them?

Real Mickey's girl, I had no problem getting into the fonts folder on the mac.
Click on the icon on the desktop.. it'll bring up 4 choices, click on the one that is the font. It'll then show it on your list of fonts, click the little + sign
and it'll give you the option to install.

I'm taking a break from my swap pieces - for my sanity! How did you make out with your fonts TinkerKat?

Thanks, I will try again. I got them into a folder - the folder the instructions specified but obviously it wasn't the right one for my word processing program. Maybe I didn't do the install portion correctly.

Oh my gosh!! My tag has changed!!! I just noticed - it used to say "earning my ears" !
How exciting!
