Hi.. I am new at this.. mainly downloading to a laptop deal... If I save the pics in my pictures... will it hold as many as I take... I plan on taking a ton... will I have any problems... I am going to clear out my laptop before I go and delete the ones I have in there... I am worried about this.

The only limit to the the number of photos you can download is the size of your laptops hard drive :)

I download my pictures to a laptop using a card reader plugged into a USB port. You are right to take "a ton" of pictures as we always lament not taking more pictures. On our last visit we took over 1200 pictures between three of us.
As to how much hard drive space you will need, it depends on the size of your camera. We used a 7 Mpixel, 3 Mpixel, and a 1.3 Mpixel camera, the latter built in to my camcorder. As I recall, we used a little over 3 GBytes of space.
Take lots of pics and have fun.

I cleared my laptop before I left for WDW but because I take photos at the highest resolution I still would not have had enough room for all the pix I took (1656). What I did was connect to the internet in my room each night and uploaded them to phanfare. Another thing you could do is transfer them to a CD or DVD if you are running out of space - just take a few blanks with you. Barrie

To find out how many pics your laptop will hold:

1) Open My Computer. In the tree view on the left, Right-Click on your C: drive, then click Properties. You will get a box that includes a chart showing how big the hard drive is, and how much of it is full, and how much of it is empty.

2) Go to My Pictures. Click on View, then click Details. The window will then show you detailed info about each picture files that's in My Pictures, including the file size. If they are JPG files, the size will not be exactly the same for each one, so you will have to look at them and figure out what the average size of your pictures is.

3) Divide the available space by the average size of the pics that your camera takes, and that tells you how many pics your laptop will hold.

Can you help me.. this is what my numbers say.. if I remembered it right..

60,000,000,000 bytes.. can anyone tell me how much space I would have?

That is what comes with it.. I think I am at 51,000,000,008 what am I looking at as pics goes?

thanks a bunch!

I leave Tuesday morning at 3 am.. so if someone can help me with this.. I would really appreciate it!!!

thanks..

Your numbers are a little unclear.

In order to tell you what you want to know, I need two numbers from you - 1) How much empty space you have, and 2) How big are the files you want to put into the empty space. When I have those numbers I can tell you how many of those files you can fit into that space.

Follow the steps I listed in my first post. In step 1 you will get a box that looks something like this:
hdd-space.jpg

The number next to the words Free Space tell you how much free, empty, available space is on your hard drive, measured in bytes.

In step 2 you should get something that looks a little like this:
jpg-size.jpg

The numbers under the Size column tell you how big each file is, measured in KB (kilobytes). 1KB = 1,024 bytes.

In my examples above, I have 13,757,632,512 bytes free on my C: drive, and most of my pics are between 1,500KB and 2,000KB.

So let's assume that my pics are about 2,000KB each. 2,000 X 1,024 = 2,048,000 bytes, so most of my pics are 2,048,000 bytes.

I have 13,757,632,512 bytes of empty space on my hard drive. 13,757,632,512(space available) / 2,048,000(size of pics) = 6717.594(number of pics), so I can fit 6717 pics on my hard drive.

I think I might be on the largest size... is this ok? The size JPEG Image is between 4200-4500 in size....

and the aval space is 51, 490, 127, 250

I also just realized the space aval says 47.9 GB was that the number I should have gave you??

Thanks again for your help!

Vicki by my math you should be able to fit 11,174 pics on yuor computer before it fills up.

So yes, the large size is fine, and no, you won't have to uninstall Word and Excel to make more room.

thanks.. you just made my trip a lot less stressful... I had no idea how many pics I should take before my laptop won't hold them! My dad keeps his camera on the highest quality.. so I can only get 250 on each 1gb chip... I do take a lot so this is wonderful!
