My husband and I are going to Disney in a week! We have a room-only (CSR) August 14-16, then a package (Contemporary) from August 16-22. We upgraded to the Contemporary primarily because of the ability to get to our air conditioned room quicker! ;) However, looking at the price...I'm concerned it may not be worth it. So now the question is -- should we change our reservation to CSR for part of the week, then go to the Contemporary for a couple nights? Also, what is the fee for changing your reservation within 5-7 days of arrival? Is it hard to change rooms part-way through your vacation? (Especially park tickets and the fact that we'll be on Free Dining...) Any help would be much appreciated!

If there are no rooms at the CSR with the free dining package, you will lose the free dining. I wouldn't do ANYTHING until you are sure they have a room with that package. I believe there is a fee for making changes after the 45 day mark, but I am not sure what it is.

You will be charged a $50 change fee for downgrading your package once your reservation is paid.

But your free dining is with the Contemporary package, so any days you take off that package you would also lose free dining for. So you need to factor that into your "is it worth it" calculations as well.

Here is the cancellation policy I found for our trip next month

Cancellation Policy

* In order to receive a full refund of your deposit, notification of cancellation must be received at least five (5) days prior to your arrival date. To cancel or modify an existing room reservation, call (407) 939-7429†.

That's the cancellation policy for a room-only reservation. Changes to packages incur charges if they're made less than 45 days out. I believe for packages, the charges 5 days out is $100.

That is true for room only, but they are talking about changing a package. Any changes after the 45 day mark do get charged a fee if it is to downgrade the reservation.

It's best for the OP to check their own reservation confirmation, because that's where the info is. But from a 2009 package reservation (so could be different now) that I had:

Changes to Reservation - For a change made 44 days or less prior to guest arrival that results in a change in the package price, a change fee of $50 per package, plus any change fees assessed by hotels or other suppliers, will be charged. Disney reserves the right to restrict changes to any reservation. Such change fees must be paid in addition to any increase in the package price resulting from the change. If air travel has been ticketed, guest will be responsible for any increase in airfare as well as the change fee assessed by the airline.

(In reality, they don't usually charge anything if it's going to cost MORE, but will when the change costs LESS). The bigger issue is the loss of free dining, and whether free dining is even available. You're talking about turning the whole reservation pretty upside down - going from a room only at a moderate to a package a moderate (hoping for free dining) and a free dining package at a deluxe to a room only at a deluxe. There's a lot of "ifs" in there. With a trip this close, I think I would just leave it alone and enjoy where you booked!
