My girlfriend's birthday is next week and I know that she has really been wanting one of those down feather comforters. Does anyone know any stores or websites where I could get a good quality, not too outrageously priced one? Also, if you have any tips like which brands to definitly not get or what to look for in a good blanket I would greatly appreciate it!!! THANKS!!! :thumbsup2

I bought mine from overstock. The thing I love about mine is it is sewn into blocks and that makes the down stay put and not go astray. What limit are you looking to spend and what size? You will get alot of input with that specific info.

I'm looking for a full/queen...possibly trying to keep it under 100 bucks...sorry for not including that originally!!

I bought my full/queen for $30 on sale at Linens & Things a while back- I just kept watching the ads knowing that I'd be moving into an apt and getting a queen bed. I bought it about 6 months before I actually used it but saved a ton!

Keep an eye out for ads. Also a lot of times stores will clearance them this time of year since people are out looking for lighter comforters since the warm weather is coming up.

My parents asked for one for Christmas from LLBean and WOW is that thing HEAVY! It cost a fortune and they ended up buying another lighter blanket from Target because even in the winter time in Upstate NY with the window cracked they were sweating their butts off! :lmao:

Try overstock too. I bought a great set of 600 thread count sheets from there and love them. Overstock is a great place to look for all kinds of stuff!

Parkers girl, overstock and like Karen mentioned the flyers!!! You should get a nice one for about 50 bucks or less. Take my advice, buy one for you as well! :thumbsup2

LL Bean has very good quality ones and they stand by their merchandise. I love ours. they have different fill weights for different needs...some are light, some are medium, some are heavy enough for the coldest winter and little or no heat.

Heed this excellent advice! I cannot use down anymore due to allergies, but definitely get a blanket that has blocks...sometimes the blocks are even hidden under the outer layer (they will specify if that is the case)

Also a good thread count is important, as the feathers are less likely to poke through a tightly woven material.

Good luck with your purchase!

I found mine at Walmart for $25 in the clearance aisle. It's the same quality as one I bought at Linens and Things for $75. :cool1:

Do get one that is quilted with blocks or has channels. These keep the down from shifting and ending all down by your feet in the morning. :upsidedow

Also, get one that has a higher percentage of down than feathers. The cheaper ones have feathers, but feathers have those pokey, scratchy quills down the center of the feathers, which make for hard, crunchy, pokey, scratchy comforters. Ouch! :( Down is the soft, white fluff, like the dandelion puffs.

Make sure you get a down comforter COVER to go over the comforter. Not to be confused with a regular comforter cover or duvet. This cover is specifically to contain & protect the down. If GF turns out to be allergic to down, it helps keep the down contained.

There is also a material called "down alternative" which is strands & puffs of polyester, made to mimic the fluff of down. I now have pillows made of this as I developed an allergy to down. I love the "down alternative". It feels like the real thing. They are also easier to launder.

Down comforters & "down alternative" are at "Bed, Bath & Beyond" stores. You may be able to find a coupon out, to bring the price down. :cheer2:

You live in Palm Beach, FL?

I got a light down comforter for the cold spells that only come to florida a few times a year at either Bed Bath and Beyond, or Linens and things. With those coupons that always come in the mail/newspaper you can get 20% off a $99 comforter. If you're lucky you'll catch them on sale.

Sams Club is where I got mine. Ralph Lauren Tartan Plaid. :teeth: 80.00 for a King.

I bought one at Big Lots for $25. It has the nice squares to hold the down in place, and it doesn't have all those "pokey" things in it either.
As a matter of fact, I called the dry cleaner today because you can't wash them. It's going to cost $21 to clean the thing!
I'm going to try to Dryell it first. THEN I'm going to have a cover made for it so I can just wash the cover.

I bought mine from overstock.com. Queen size down comforter and duvet cover for under $50.00 in January. They frequently have sales with zero $$ shipping.

Thanks for all the great info. I have seen a few that caught my eye on overstock. I'm going to some of the stores you guys listed, this weekend to see what I can find. THANKS!!! = )
