Can anyone explain to me how this system operates and can it be avoided.Long time since we've arrived at MCO ( last few times it's been Sanford) and I remember some confusion about luggage being dropped twice on arrival ( picking it up only to place on carousel again)!.Is this still the case?
Many thanks.

Yes it's the same system.

Off plane, through immigration. Pick up luggage, through customs.

Drop off luggage, up escalator/lift onto monorail. If you have small cases you can take them on the monorail I think and avoid the second drop - never done it.

Pick cases up again, queue for car hire (avoid being ripped off!) and finally leave.

I know some people have one person queue for car hire and one get cases off second drop.

Never found it that bad - so happy to be there!

according to the orlando airport website:

After clearing Immigration and Customs:

Airside 4 (Gates 60-99): You may either keep your checked bags with you and take the escalator directly up to the AGT station, or place your checked baggage on the baggage belt for transfer to the Main Terminal.

Airside 1 (Gates 1-29): Place your checked baggage on the baggage belt for transfer to the Main Terminal then proceed up the escalator, through the security checkpoint, then walk over to the AGT (train) station.

So if you come in through gates 60-99, you can keep your luggage with you - you don't have to do the double drop..

I'm pretty sure Virgin and BA always land in 60-99 without fail. I know for sure we have always gone through the exact same area everytime we have landed.

Also I think the only thing that matters is that you can carry your luggage. We always have 2 large, 1 very large suitcases and a rolling hand luggage AND my handbag. We have always been directed up the escalator. So I don't think suitcase size matters, just whether you can safely carry it.

Yes, BA and Virgin always land in 60 - 99 so you can always take all of your luggage on the monorail with you (without double drop)..

but martinair and a few others come in the other way (requiring double drop)

Ah good to know! I've only ever flown BA or Virgin so I didn't know that!
