My 8 year old daughter has Down syndrome and has a tendency to wander. We have a security system at home that beeps when doors are opened so that we know if she leaves. I've heard of travel alarms that can be put on hotel rooms to serve this purpose. Obviously we would want something that is loud enough to wake us at night without disturbing other people at the hotel. Has anyone found such a product?

would something like this work for you https://www.amazon.com/Telko-Securi...=1470009739&sr=8-30&keywords=hotel+door+alarm

I have this but I have never used it to know how loud it is http://www.houzz.com/photos/3683161...arm-by-Trademark-Home-contemporary-door-stops

my cusent have a tendency to wonder off and there parent try to get hotel room with more then one room so the kids get the bed room parent get the room by the door this way they can hear them before they leave it has worked for them so room like the family sweets at AOA would have these type of rooms

You can buy stick on window alarms at Walmart. It would work perfect for this. Sticks on with double sided tape. It stops when you shut the door. You physically flip a button to arm it. Just put it at the top of the door.

I will look at those. Thank you. Switching rooms isn't an option at this point. We leave in 2 weeks and are staying at the Boardwalk.

This sounds like what we are looking for. Do you by chance know the brand or what section to find it in at Walmart?

Probably in the hardware section where the doorknobs and things are. I have seen these at Dollar Tree as well. My daughter has them on her windows and they are super loud and piercing.

Which would be inappropriate to use at a hotel, I would think. The OP specifically said she/he was looking for something that would wake them up but not everyone around them. Something "super loud and piercing" would certainly wake up many rooms around them (and likely cause panic as people would think it was some sort of fire alarm).

If you do get something that sticks with adhesive, bring some rubbing alcohol to remove residue before you stick it to the paint so it stays on, and after, to remove the adhesive left behind when you take it off.

Which is the exact reason I mentioned that. I don't recall recommending them, just answering the question about where they could be found. Because they have them at Dollar Tree, it's cheap enough to go get one and try out.

These things peel right off. They have some pretty cheap adhesive. They are nothing you would have to worry about peeling paint off or leaving sticky stuff behind.

Or you can use one of these (we used it with my Mom who had Vascular Dementia to alert us if she got too far down the hall at night)

Wireless Driveway Alert System

You can place the alert unit on the floor, so that if she gets out of bed and breaks the beam, it will sound. The version we bought (several years ago) was QUITE loud, but my husband "muffled" the sound by wrapping the alarm unit in several layers of newspaper and a beach towel, and then putting it into a ziplock bag to hold his wrapping together. Looked weird and lumpy and silly, but it worked!

  • As mentioned, dollar tree sells them.
  • The adhesive pad comes off easy with mineral oil.
  • Getting some 3m command adhesive pads would alleviate that issue entirely.
  • The alarm is loud and piercing but unlikely to carry far outside the roomost. No more so than an alarm clock.
  • Squirting hot glue into the piezo speaker to mute it a bit.
  • Alternately, travel locks can be purchased to secure the door. One might be concerned about using one in case of a fire but they can be opened as easily as turning the door lock by an adult.
  • I would test other alarm options before relying on them. In my experience, motion sensor types tend to go off too easily and light beam tripwire types can be stepped over (even by accident) and most other solutions will be much more expensive.
  • A thin plank (cardboard or foam core even) wedged in above door with a bunch of empty pop cans would get the job done.
  • A fun option would be to tape a party popper to the door jam, but that's maybe not for everyone.
  • A classic method would be tie a length of string to the door and run it to a loop around your big toe. Running it to a paper plate full of pop cans on the table might be better.
  • They make proximity alarms with a clip you tag kids clothes with and it alarms if kid gets too far away.
Hope at least some of that helps. Whatever ends up working, hope you have a great trip.

Some great ideas there! I not sure if we should suggest the 3M Command hooks, only because we don't want to risk pulling any paint off of walls, trim, doors, etc. Painter's tape should be fine - I always carry a small amount with me when I travel, because it can come in handy! - but I would personally leave the 3M Command products at home. I don't want to accidently cause any damage to my favorite place! :)

The door jams and doors are usually enamled steel so the command feature should work very well. Remember that the 3m product is made to be removed easily and without damaging the surface.

Painters tape is as well but it's not meant to actually bear any weight beyond its papery self. A couple of exuberant door closes and the taped alarm may shake loose.

I actually bring a couple mini low temperature glue stick when I travel for this sort of thing. Heat the end with a lighter and dab it on the item then stick item to the painted metal surface. It'll pop off clean when you need to go and if it fights you, you can blow the hair dryer on it a bit first.

This is what we had. It was not overly loud. You can put a piece of tape over the speaker to further mute it. The sound also stops when the door is closed.

You may want to call Disney and ask if they have these for their doors. MANY hotels are starting to have kits for children with special needs and these are included. If Disney doesn't, they may be on their way to getting it soon.
