First time ever on a cruise after multiple visits to WDW.

So ----- what is the best over the conter medicine to keep the family
(Dad, Mom, Grandma and 4,6, and 8 year olds) from getting
Seasick?

Whatever you suggest note whether you take each day at
Sea, or only when symptons occur or, etc.

Thanks for the help. 28 days to go.

I like Bonine...works great and doesn't make you as sleepy as Dramamine. I took it as soon as I felt a little weird or if there was any movement on the ship...If you are prone to seasickness then I would keep taking it as long as the ship is moving. I normally try not to take meds but when I am on vacation the last think I want is to feel sick :thumbsup2

I have heard people really liking those patches you get prescribed by a doctor but haven't tried them myself.

The scopolomine (sp?) patches are for adult use only. We bought Travel Safe, which is the exact same formulation of Bonine, (meclazine) for under $5 for a bottle of 100. My 9 year old was able to safely take half the adult dosage, per his pediatritian. I would definatly consult your childrens doctor, as well as yours, for any adverse reactions to other medications or vitamins.

Bonine and Dramamine less drowsy are the same thing. Regular Dramamaing is different and will cause drowsiness (which you might want at night). You get the generic of Bonine easily at several stores.

Crystallized Ginger as needed.
DH took Bonine the first day but it made him almost as drowsy as Benadryl (he's 6'1" so it's not that he's tiny) as he put it, I'd rather not sleep through my vacation.

I have seen others mention ginger capsules. Does anyone know where I can find these? Store/aisle?

You may be surprised. I get motion sickness in cars and planes, but not to terrible. I get it really bad if I watch a video on youtube and it moves a lot.
I have been on 3 cruises, 2 were NCL several years ago. On both cruises I would have at least 1 night where I felt queasy. I wore the pressure writst bands and they seemed to help, and I would take dramamine every so often.
On the Dream this past spring, I brought bonine and gingersnap cookies. I took bonine before I boarded and never needed it again. This ship is so big and it has the stabilizers, and I hardly felt the movement at all. Most movement I felt was when I was in the bathroom....no pun intended. :lmao:
This ship does sail much smoother, but of course with rougher waters (which you never know if you will have) it could be worse. I would get bonine and also bring a bag of gingersnaps. We ended up just eating the ginger snaps through out the trip and on the way home as a snack, as we never needed them for seasickness.
I was also told ginger pills work great and I bought those and tried them at home before hand and I got terrible heartburn, so I didn't bring those along.
You could also pack a few cans of gingerale in your carryon to bring on the ship.
If you fell a bit queasy, go up to a higher deck and get some air. Going down to a cabin will actually make you fell the movement more. But again, I felt the Dream was VERY smooth.

I get motion sick driving home from the mall, so I was extremely concerned about cruising. Two cruises so far, and no problem, although I should note that 14 nights at sea so far, and only one night was really rough.

Here's my "formula", your results may vary. I take ginger capsules twice per day (purchased at GNC), avoid creme/cheese sauces (this is key for me), I wear seabands (purchased at the local drugstore) in bed, and I do bring bonine just in case (and have yet to take one on board). I avoid dramamine at all costs, as it makes me b*#&hy and sleepy (as my DH will attest ;))

The biggest key I have found regarding sea sickness is to be proactive as once that queasy feeling starts, the meds won't work. I take one the day we sail and then just watch the waves - if it gets rough, I take another each day. If we have excursions that involve boats, I take one that morning as well. DH just takes them to be sure there are no issues. Our pill of choice is Bonine.

We are going on our first cruise in Nov. At the drugstore I found Gravol Ginger chewable soft lozenges, non drowsy. My DS 11, gets a bit of motion sickness, these will be perfect for him. I also have ginger pills for us adults. Those are just in the drug stores, usually where the anti nasea meds are. I also purchased Sea Bands. I don't know if we will use them, but I have them just in case. :) I was reading somewhere online that ginger Altoids were supposed to work well. So of course, I had to have those too. These were a little tricky to find, but at a small specialty candy shop in town, they were able to order them for me, so I have those too!! I am determined that not one of us (4) are going to have any kind of seasickness if I can help it. ;)

I don't know if Gravol is available here in the states. I have heard other Canadians mention it before, but have never found it locally

I took GingerAle with me. Also I only had problems when the boat was docked but I would grab a can of gingerale & go to an open deck the fresh air helped me.

Just be sure to try them out prior to be sure you don't get heartburn. I knw the discomfort of the heartburn was bothering as bad as seasickness would so I looked for other "ginger"options.

I thought Gravol would be available in the US. Gravol works well for any kind of motion sickness. I too, will be bringing GingerAle. I find Canada Dry to be the best because it has real ginger (not flavoring) in it. (and not because I am Canadian:laughing:))

Gravol is great, but you have to be careful with it - with some people it knocks you right out. If I take 2 of them I'm out for the night. I don't even bother getting sleeping pills, since I've never found one that makes me as sleepy as Gravol.

It is a personal thing though - my DD (14), who weighs about half of what I do can take Gravol and it won't even make her a little tired, and I've got friends who swear that their kids get a little hyper on it.

Ginger Ale (another Canadian vouching for Canada Dry here! ;) ) also can help. As someone said above ginger capsules can be a little rough on your system so I'd take one at home before bringing it with you. When I used them I found that they did help in the long run, but seemed to make it worse for the first 10-15 minutes after I took it.

Good luck - hopefully you won't need any of these tips!!

I did just google it and it's is only in Canada. It also says the effects are the same as benydril, so I guess if that makes uyou sleepy, so would gravol.

You actually don't need to by anything. DCL has free meclizine (the active ingredient in Bonine) tablets at guest services and outside medical. If you need them, they give them to you. That way, you don't need to buy what you may not need. My DD gets car sick but on three cruises (24 days total) she has only needed a tablet twice.

We swear by Bonine. Been taking it for years. Take it the first day we board for that crossing of the Gulf, then only take it as needed. We have felt seasick symptoms and THEN taken it -- but laid down for it to take affect for about an hour -- and we were as good as ever. Never makes us drowsy. :thumbsup2

TIP: I take it on any excursion that involves a bus, just in case I feel car sick. Works every time.
