It's all part of the plan to enhance the union run GM.

Although not as serious as toyotas, GM is currently having possible problems with their Cobalts power steering failing at low speeds according the NHTSA...

Because a vehicle that has a racing engine where the RPMs keep going up can and will explode. Go and google it.

I believe that all modern cars have electronic rev limiters that will not let an engine rev beyond a certain RPM...to protect the engine.

I saw this story on the local news last night, so it doesn't appear that it's being kept quiet. The LA Times isn't exactly a small town paper either.

I used to think the world of Toyota's. Have owned two in the past. They were great cars. But after this, there is no way that I would buy one anytime soon. Toyota left behind their own philosophy for a buck and that is too concerning. After hearing the tapes of the poor family in California who died, as well as reading about other mysterious fatal accidents that now look like the culprit was the faulty petals... well... I just don't want to be in that number.

I actually knew that family and believe me, I'm not taking this "recall" lightly.

I feel horrible for the families that have dealt with these things but I feel confident that Toyota will fix this problem and their cars will be fine. I would be glad to buy one once they get past this.

By the way, are any Lexus models affected by this? I hadn't heard.

I think it's alot of hype to boost sales for US automakers. Think about Toyota's history. How many recalls have they had? Now think about the history of US automakers. How many recalls have they had? There is no comparison. I'll stand behind Toyota as well as Honda anyday.

Any death while sad does not negate the fact that these incidents have affected a very very very small percentage of Toyotas the road today. It is the H1N1 hype Part Deux.

Man, so much doom and gloom. Cars are complex machines and from time to time they will have defective parts. If you car accelerates put it in neutral, coast to the side of the road, and put it in acc or off...disaster averted. It only requires a bit of thinking on your feet (or seat as it were). People panicking and not doing the rational steps to avoid a disaster is what ultimately leads to the accidents in the end. It is like people flipping their cars because a tire blows. It is really not that hard to keep all 4 tires on the ground if you don't panic.

If someone can land a plane on a river without loosing any lives we should be able to react to the unexpected in our cars with the same level of quick thinking. At all times we should expect a tire is going to blow, steering is going to lock, the brakes are going to fail, or the accelerator will stick and be prepared to act accordingly. 100% attention on driving and not distractions will help keep you safe.

I do think some of the hype is because it is a foreign car company. I despise the American car companies personally and wouldn't even consider buying a car from them. I suspect the same statements wouldn't be made if it were a GM product with the same problems. That is only speculation on my part of course.

All car manufacturers have had recalls for things that could possibly kill you:

Honda: Airbag defect

GM: Side saddle gas tank defect

Dodge/Jeep/Ford: False park defect

Ford: Pinto gas tank explosions

Mercedes: wiring harness defect

I expect Toyota will weather this storm and their quality of product will be even greater.

Some of the alarmists on this thread make it sound as if every Toyota will spontaneously combust

DH & I were talking about this tonight. ALL cars manufacturers end up with recalls. Even safety ones. We have no idea why people are going so crazy about this one compared to others in the past.

I would be way more scared of brake failure which I've also experienced. I slowed that car down & managed to stop that car also. Just like the revving car I slowed down & stopped.

According to the site i found, there were 119 confirmed deaths directly caused by the problem and up to 3000 catastrophic injuries caused.

Still driving fords? Still using firestone tires? What about firestone tires on ford. While the firestone tires were used on other vehicles, it was only the ford explorer that had such a deadly problem.

Faulty logic. Part of the problem is that Toyota has not been forthcoming with recalls when they knew there was a problem. Two totally different cultures with two totally different ways of approaching the issues.

So by this logic, the big bad American car makers sabotaged the manufacture and installation of these particular gas pedals, just so they could crow about Toyota and faulty parts to 8 of their models.

If you're into conspiracy theories, maybe. I'm not.

This problem is squarely on Toyota...and as more info comes out, they aren't looking quite as princely as they're trying to seem.
