Don't be dancing at the monuments..or else..

This craziness started last week sometime with a lady bebopping along at the feet of Jefferson and being arrested for it. This of course set off a firestorm and now poor Jefferson has dance dance revolution going on in his rotunda. The whole thing is just odd to me.

oddly enough, you have to have a permit to dance or sing at any of the sights in dc. i got in trouble when i was 16, i think. we were singing while in line to go into the washington monument and a guard came up and told us that if we continued without a permit, we'd be arrested. guess how quickly we shut up? we switched over to counting the ways to say vomit. we can up with like 46 or something.

Didn't they have a "flash mob" recently at the Lincoln Memorial? Noone got arrested. Per this article, I would assume the group must have had a permit.

Maybe Jefferson has it stipulated in his will.

Heck, I used to use the Jefferson Memorial as a playground because it was right near the softball fields where my dad coached. I'm sure there was some dancing along with the games of tag, hide and go seek and climb the columns that we used to play.

I can see both sides of this. The rules for memorials are probably uniform, maybe they shouldn't be, but I think they probably are. Some of the memorials, Vietnam, Korea, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Iwo Jima, maybe the only place a family member has to go to remember a family member who is missing and presumed dead. They're places that deserve our respect, and outlawing protests without permits makes sense to me. On the other hand, I think the way they went about handling the incident that was video taped was wrong.
