Donating yarn

Due to a event sucky diagnosis, I won't be knitting anymore. Does anyone know of a good plac or charity for a pretty big stash.

Sometimes local churches make prayer shawls or blankets for hospitals. I know my parents church does. They are in WV if you happen to be close by.

there might also be a way to donate the yarn to a church or group that is making afghans for southern tornado survivors. unfortunately, many people down here lost everything they own. i haven't heard of such a church/group, but there's GOT to be one. practically every church in the state is collecting money, toiletries, food, cooking meals, etc.

Our church does prayer shawls, and in the winter, there are many groups that make hats.

Yarn donations are taken all year.

So -you may want to check out some local churches

The places mentioned are all good ideas. You could also check out freecycle or a school. Some schools are now starting knitting clubs and with budget cuts there is no money for anything.

Hope you are able to find another hobby you enjoy.

Thank you for the suggestions. I would live to find a group working with the tornado victims. Years ago I worked in ok with PTSD kids. Tons of cross stitch kits also. Hmmmm.. I think those are harder to find homes for.

I have some that would make nice chemo caps too, thinking about the yarn again.

Thanks for the well wishes too. I had grown find of my fine motor skills, but so be it. You can't change what you can't change.

Yarn, cross stitch kits, etc. are better offered to hobby and handicraft groups, not relief agencies. Although the percentage of persons with the necessary dexterity may be smaller, convalescent homes and senior centers, where residents tend to have a lot of spare time, may be places worth inquiring at. You might even inquire at a school or college with a large art department.

I have donated to my local Senior Center. They have a group that makes blankets to donate to sick children. You might find that a local church will take it for similar purposes.

Freecycle would also be an option.

I've also seen yarn for sale at Goodwill a number of times, so if you can't find anywhere else, you can drop it off there!

Thanks. We do have a good senior citizen center. I was also thinking the women's shelter I work with. Sometimes I don't think of what is right in front of my nose. They don't have storage for a lot, but a few balls and needles might be nice.

After inheriting a bunch of yarn from my grandmother and not using it, I gave mine to my friend, who is a Girl Scout mom. Apparently there's a knitting/crocheting badge, so they appreciated the yarn.

If you want to donate the yarn, don't do freecycle. You won't know where the yarn is actually going.

Local places to check are women's shelters (our's is called Women's Community), a local hospital volunteer organization (they make hats for cancer patients and newborns), and elderly homes. Nursing homes may not take it, but an assisted living home may.

Some is going to my sil's K class. It is a private school, and they use knitting to teach everything from patterns, to counting.

I was originally thinking all or nothing. I'm like that sometimes, and I was angry. You know how it is, sometimes.

People in our community donate yarn to our church - then in turn, I take the yarn from church to the State Penitentiary in a nearby larger city. The inmates there knit it (both hand knit and knitting machines) into scarves, hats and mittens. These items are then donated to local and regional homeless shelters and the like.

Our church also does prayer shawls - we donated quite a few to an Alabama Church that suffered with the tornado damage...

and at the monthly knit/blanket/ etc meetings (we call it Caring Hands) we do make 100's of blankets for Project linus

with yarn we crochet edges around the fleece blankets - some talented people knit blankets, or crochet blankets as well - there are many patterns on the website...
