My daughters are very interested in the idea of seeing dolphins. Noticed that this is a something that we can do while at HHI. Any information would be appreciated (cost, time, worth, etc.).

There are dolphin tours from the resort 4-5x in the week two hours each and are at 9:00, 11:00 and 1:00(this was week of june 7). Need reservation before hand and there is a fee. We have had free viewing of dolphins from our porch in building 29 one year as the kayakers interacted with them at the entrance to shelter cove..very cool.

We just came back from our trip last week. I recommend the disney tour set up for one main reason.

1. There is a six person limit with the disney tour and they contract this out. We hit the jackpot and it was just DW, DD and myself on our trip. so if this is the first time doing a dolphin tour it was outstanding to have the boat all by ourselves. We boarded with a guide named Craig and he was veey helpful and informative while doing the cruise. So it was like our own private tour! He turned anyway we asked him to for photos and close up looks! He is knowledgable and helps with all questions on dolphins and what dolphins daily life consists of. You board right at the Disney boat slip and the tour guide will meet you right where you sign up for the tour, at the recreation / pool area.

With that being said, other tour boats passed us and they were loaded with passengers so that is why I recommend the Disney run tour, nice private, informative and it was just awesome!

There are outside tours offered other than the disney and you may save $10. or $15. per person. The disney tour is $40.00 per person and you can probably find an outside tour for $25.00 per person but when you check in there will give you an activity sheet and on certain days Disney has a DVC member day discount of 10%. I know every Weds. is standard discount day but they had it on a Mon. as well and that is when we went.

Tours are at 9, 11, and 1 each day.

To further verify, it is $36.00 a person when you select a DVC member discount day. This was the very first we we did when we got to the resort was to go sign up so it is not sold out on a DVC member discount day

Don't forget the possibility of seeing dolphins "in the wild" around the resort and over at the Beach Club. We've seen dolphins in the inlet to the right as you face the main lodge, swimming among the yachts in the evening, and in the ocean at the beach house.

My DH and I plan on doing a dolphin tour this July. I'm wondering which time would be the best time to take the tour, the earliest?

The end of the beach at South Beach in Sea Pines is a good place to go at sunset to see dolphins.

Always pick a time when high tide is in! They can tell you that when you reserve.

I hate to be a naysayer, but...

Dh and I took the dolphin tour with Disney @ Hilton Head and were generally pretty happy with it.

THEN, we went to Gulf Shores with family and went on a Dolphin tour. Wow!! In Gulf Shores, we rode on a much larger boat, and no it wasn't as intimate. BUT WOW!! We saw lots and lots of Dolphins. We had 6 or 8 dolphins running in our wake for most of the trip and many many more running to the side of the boat. It was awesome!!

Note: We were in Hilton Head in November, and were in Gulf Shores in July.

Plus, of course the Gulf is a oily smelly mess.

We have taken the dolphin excursions from DVC Hilton Head several times and always have seen dolphins. Just returned from HH and didn't book a dolphin excursion this time but saw many right from the beach on two different mornings.

I would also suggest the kayaking. We actually had a momma and baby dolphin swim right up from underneath us and follow us for a little while.
