Dolphin/Gold SPG upgrade question

We've made a decision to stay at the Dolphin over Christmas (12/18-12/30.) I'm debating back and forth now about what room to book--should I save money and get a standard room or go for the balcony/resort view? We were upgraded to the balcony room last time but that was in the off season. I'm leaning toward just booking the balcony room since that's what I really want. But since I'm a gold spg member, what would I get upgraded to (if it was available?)

Anybody been upgraded from a standard to a balcony at a busy time?

We stayed at Swan last x-mas week and tried to upgrade to a suite using points and were unable due to availability. They were full at both Swan and Dolphin. We were able to get teacher's discount and stayed CL for $214.

I've been upgraded to a resort view on two stays. Once I was offered a balconey for an extra $30, but I didn't have any SPG points. If having a balcony is extremely important, you should book it if you can afford it.
