Has anyone seen this documentary? I saw parts of it and it made me sick to my stomach! The Japanese trap them in this cove every year and slaughter them. The water turns red and its horrific! They keep the bottle-nosed ones to sell them to parks. I was starting to think we would never go to Sea World again but then Sea World made an announcement afterwards that said they haven't used wild dolphins in decades. That made me feel better. Everyone should go to savejapandolphins.org and sign the petition to stop the killings. It's the only humane thing to do!

There is another thread about this. But Japan has been doing this for years. Another thing real popular that really people don't seem to know or mention is shark fin soup. Fishermen will catch sharks, cut their fins off and throw them back in the water and they die.

I have The Cove in my Netflix queue. Should be here in the next day or two.

Really? I looked for a similiar thread but couldn't find one. Was it a long time ago? And that is awful what they do to sharks! I hate that anything should suffer! If they are going to do that they should have the decency to put them out of their misery! What type of person can inflict so much suffering on something else? It boggles my mind!

Japan is notorious for doing such things. I can't figure out why they think it's OK.

I don't know how to link a different thread but: it was a thread from yesterday I think that started: Did you see on Oprah and it talks about the documentary.

I myself didn't see that Oprah show or I would have just cried and I don't think I would be able to watch the documentary.

When I was young I watched the Patridge Family and there was a segment about orcas and how they were being killed and I wrote to President Ford and I think I still have the letter they sent back.

Shark finning is cruel. And all for a bowl of soup. I heard a piece on NPR about the dolphins in the cove and was horrified. I don't understand why people do things like that.

I have always been anti-seaworld and anti-dolphin swims for this reason.
Seaworld claims they don't use wild dolphins--but they came from somewhere.....and seaworld does NOT like the guy who is in the documentary. It says a lot for him when he was the biggest advocate for using dolphins then after 10 years realized their intelligence level and what it was doing to them to be our entertainers and has spent 30 years trying to reverse what he started with Flipper.

Another thing--Japanese sell this meat and don't note that it's dolphin meat when they package it. Dolphin meat is either 200 or 2000% above the maximum mercury amount allowable, so it's not safe and noone is doing anything about it!!! That just amazes me!

If you haven't seen this documentary----I really urge you to get it and watch it!!

I don't know if I could handle watching the whole documentary. Just the little piece I saw on Oprah has really affected me. I could barely watch it! It made me cry and be sick to my stomach. Watching the whole documentary just might throw me into a psychiatrist's chair!

It is hard to watch. The first half isn't so bad--it's more the last 30 min or so where it's really graphic.

It makes you realize--dolphins have an intelligence level that is pretty close to our own. They know what is going on around them--they know their babies have been separated from them--and they can hear them being killed while they are all locked into that cove. Now imagine us in that same situation.........and yet, noone is stepping in to put a stop to it! Even aside from the killing--these people are selling poisonous meat to the public and nothing is being done---I think they said 25k a year are killed.......the ones who aren't selected for the swim programs, the entertainment, etc.......

It makes me sick! The same feeling I felt when I first heard about the baby seals being clubbed! I really wanted to be an animal rescuer when I grew up but there wasn't a major for that in college! I'm a teacher instead. And although I like teaching children I feel my real passion is still in animal welfare!

I'm sorry, but is this a joke? You wanted to be an 'animal rescuer' but there was no 'major' for it in college? Your real passion is 'animal welfare' but you will continue to go to Sea World since they announced that they do not use 'wild dolphins'?

What, do the Sea World dolphins volunteer?

They were born in Sea World...it's their home...and I'm sure the originals were injured to almost death. Sea World isn't the antichrist of sea animals.

Sea World does NOT capture wild animals. In fact they try to rehab injured animals and then set them free. A few animals born in captivity seems worth that.

True that the original animals had to be wild. But much has changed since then.

Why do you think it's a joke?:confused3 I wouldn't go to Sea World if I thought they were the same dolphins caught in the wild. When I found out they were born there or rescued then it became a different story.

I won't go to circuses because of their treatment to animals, mainly elephants. So I do think about what I'm supporting.

I know the Sea World trainers are paid. I said I wanted to be an animal rescuer not an animal trainer! Why is that a joke?:confused3

Because that person thinks Sea World is the opposite of rescuing animals. (assuming that's what they mean)

Oh! I actually see Sea World as doing a lot of good for animals. Maybe I need to research it more but I always thought of them as animal activists. I haven't been to Sea World since the 90's so I'm definately not an expert in this!

Well a lot of people feel that when they first started it was all about just helping sea life. Now they think it's just a production (like a circus). But you're right about Sea World they are activists and do nothing but good to and for animals.

This is how I feel about Sea World. I would be just as impressed by the whales and dolphins if they did the education show and skipped all the hoopla. I am amazed at them just by the sight of them - they don't need to have them do "tricks" to dazzle the audience. They should just stick with the education part.:thumbsup2

I believe that movie was nominate at the oscars for something? I saw a little preview upon its nomination (before that I have never heard of it). The preview made me want to cry. I love dolphins, I think they are so pretty, I can't imagine people doing this to them, so sad.
