Are the glow sticks at Disney really that unimaginative? Thought this would be a treat. We geat the Dollar Store ones all the time. How much are they at Disney? First visit, and we did not really want to go the budget route.

Love the Boards!!!!

People bring them from the dollar store because these types of things at Disney are very expensive. Add a couple of kids and you can save a lot of money.

If you're not on a budget, then go and enjoy!

well, I don't know about other people, but what we did was get the dollar store glow sticks, and DD then handed them out to kids waiting for the parade that didn't have any glow sticks/ glowing type of things. (of course we asked the parents first) It was such a fun way to spread the magic, and DD had alot of fun doing that.

I'll never forget one mom, she thanked us, and then as they were walking away, she said to her child... "wow, do you think that was one of Santa's helpers". It was very rewarding.:goodvibes

Disney doesn't sell glow sticks, they sell elaborate spinning, big character type glowing machines!!! Folks like me buy glow sticks, bracelets and necklaces so our kids have something glow-y. They are not in the way and don't turn into something that I have to carry at the end of the night :thumbsup2

I think the majority of Disney items are $10 - $25 each. My daughter had her own money last year, so she bought a Mickey light-up light saber thing, and a string thing that had flourescent string on a handle that spun around and made shapes and had a light to show the string in the dark. That was at least $20, not sure of the exact amount.

We all wore the glow necklaces and hung the glow sticks off of them. I think for this summer, I'll just stick with necklaces and bracelets though. The sticks don't do that much on their own :lmao:

Well, we have only been to DLR, but when there I haven't even *seen* proper glow sticks. So for us, it's bringing stuff we cannot get while there. Sure they have glowy stuff, but none of it is attractive to us. Whereas a ton of cheapie glowsticks (we actually like the ones at Michaels better than the dollar store) are relatively unique!

When we were at Fantasmic, we pulled out the dollar store necklaces and bracelets. Our dd 14 and friend 11 were quite happy with them> They used the bracelets to attach to the necklace - had a few of them connecting and hanging done. Like someone else said, we didn't have to carry them at the end of the night and they were cheap.

I found magic wand (with a star on top) and pirate sword glow sticks at our Dollar store..and yes, I'm bringing them.

We are admitted not a budget family when it comes to Disney. (I'm very very frugal elsewhere in my life, so vacations are our big splurge.) Anyway, we do bring down glow necklaces/bracelets/etc from the dollar store. They don't take up much room and like others have said, I can afford to spread the magic.

How fun!!!! I'm going to have to steal this idea.

We go the Dollar Store glow stick route too. I just can't see putting $5+ down for something that will only last the night. I'd rather dump my money into something a little more tangible.

We never get a whole lot of souvies when we go, mainly silhouettes and a plush for the kids, but that is more driven by the size of our house versus the money issue. We're not swimming in it, mind you, but we are quite frugal.

We buy a couple boxes of the glow necklaces, bracelets, etc at the dollar store and pass them out to other little kids on the parade route, on the bus on the way to the parks etc. I always ask their parents first, if they are allowed to have them. I have yet to have anyone tell me NO. I just think its a nice way to spread some disney magic!! Plus....those parents are always so grateful that they didn't just dump 6 bucks on some little light up thing on the street (especially those with little little ones.)

We brought glow sticks with us, and it was something that other kids noticed and replied,'Cool, glow sticks." They were the kind with connectors to make them into bracelets and necklaces. It was fun to have something that NOT everyone else owned. Plus, your kids will be so surprised by the little details, from you, that shows you were thinking of them. I also made some candy puches out of paper with Disney Characters on them and filled them with little treats. My son still talks about those and how he looks forward to having them again one day. Sometimes it's just the little things in life that make you smile.... :)

ps-you can print the candy pockets out from the Creative Dis sign thread here on the boards. Mel has a bunch of great ones and you will find TONS of other stuff you could do for your trip as well to make it all the more magical.:wizard:

I'm a 40 year old big baby... every time I go to Disney I end up buying those necklaces that glow and spin the lights in different directions. I always say I feel like a Christmas tree when I'm wearing one. LOL

I can't tell you how many I've brought home and then forgot to bring back on the next trip.... maybe I'll remember them this trip or maybe I'll pay another $10 for 2 new ones!

Has anyone seen those glow bracelets and necklaces anywhere lately? I usually see them around Halloween. I would like to pick some up for my trip this month.

We take several packs of the dollar store glow sticks when we go. They entertain the kids while waiting for the parade, we can easily find the kids after the parade, we don't have to carry them and then they provide entertainment on the bus and the walk to the room. If they get lost/destroyed it is no big deal. The kids are always amused to see how long they continue to glow. This trip however, I did splurge. In the party supply section of our Walmart, they had these globe spinner things (where the one end has the lights that light up when you push the button). The globe is about the size of a baseball, it's pink and says princess and it was $3. I got one for DDs Easter basket and she loves it. It will be going along to DW with us but if it gets broken, it can be easily replaced when we get home. They had blue boyish ones too but I can't remember what they had on them.

I agree with pp- the glowing wands with shapes at the end are really nice and glow brightly, but the bracelets stink!! The ones at Michael's are much better, and I think you might even get more.

We got this idea off Dis before our last trip, and while we did have plenty of $$ saved for souvenirs, the light -up stuff is always such a rip-off, and never gets used again after the parade. Save your souvenir dollars for something more lasting.

One thing to keep in mind though...those cant go on "dark" rides because they cant be shut off. A cm made me toss mine before going on Stitch (but I am an adult so maybe a child would be treated differently). A cm on Haunted Mansion made me put it in my shirt so it wasn't as noticeable. It is best to hand them to kids when the rides are done for the night and not risk disappointment if they encounter those issues.

Good to know about glow "things" not being allowed on some rides.

Thanks for all the great info, as usual.
