I honestly don't recall having a cheap ponch 'not work'. Bring the cheap ones - you'll be kicking yourself for having to buy the expensive ones in the park. And then, sometimes you need them for only a few minutes because of the short afternoon showers. Remember to bring a walmart bag to put the wet ponchos in. Hang them to dry at the hotel and re-fold for the next day.
Go for the dollar-store ponchos - you can buy several for the price of one Disney poncho! Also, it depends on what time of year you go - we went in the winter and didn't need ponchos. I took a chance and didn't bring any (couldn't find them any at the time). I would have been mad if I had spent $$ on Disney ponchos and never even used them.
The most un-fun time I've ever had at Disney was when it poured at the MK and people flooded the Emporium trying to get out of the rain and buy ponchos. A family of four would have to drop a pretty penny just to get those ponchos and then they are used for about 20 minutes.
We take both $store ones and slightly better ones all from home. if there is little chance of rain we just carry the cheep'os in our fanny pouch but if we hit a really rain filled day, we will carry or pack the better ones. We also use the $ ones for wet rides as we always go winter season.
I love my Dollar Store ponchos! I buy more than I need so that if it's near the end of the day, I can just one away, or give to someone else, if I'm just coming off a wet ride. That way I don't have to worry about refolding and packing back up.
I hate the dollar store ponchos, and hate the environmental impact of all of those cheapie ones being tossed instead of folded and used again. I bought a Disney poncho for 6 or 7 bucks in September, and have used it on two subsequent trips so far. Well worth it in every way!
I have never bought the dollar store ones but, I have bout ones at Target and Wal-mart in the camping section for less than $1 (they are in small plastic bags). We use them for the rain and for multiple trips on Kali River Rapids and they work great!
If it's going to rain a lot while your there, then the Disney ponchos are worth it because they are heavier and they won't stick to your skin as easily as the cheap ones (more likely to happen if you don't put it on before it starts raining and your skin gets wet).
If there's only a slight chance of rain, bring the cheap ones because they take up very little space in your bag so they're nice to have "in a pinch". You can re-use the cheap ones too...they just won't hold up as long as the thicker ones they sell at WDW.
I like the dollar store ones. I keep a bunch of them in my suitcase so they are always ready for a Disney trip! I throw them in my bag for the day in the parks and if I use them, we toss them at the end of the day and pack new ones for the next day. SO much better than trying to dry out huge dripping wet ponchos in your hotel room1!!
We were at WDW last week and had a few heavy showers. I have always taken the Dollar store ponchos and have never had the need to use them. This time I had one $ store and 1 heavier WalMart one. I must admit, my DD was wiching she had a heavier one like mine, sine her $ one kept blowing up and woujldn't stay on her head. I was willing to switch, but mine would have been too long for her.
I love the mulit-colored Dollar Store ponchos and/or cheap ones from Walmart For our long trips, I buy 2 per person so we can throw away halfway through the trip and bring out the new! I can't see spending more $$ on something like a poncho because we never use them except at WDW and I do not want to store them year-to-year. Plus the thinner ones fold up better to carry when we're not using them .vs. the heavy ones. I buy odd colors so we don't look like the other million ponchos in the park. The Dollar Store is a goldmine for other trip items as well: travel size toiletries, over-the-door shoe hangers which can store alot of small items in your room when hung glow-in-the-dark stuff so the kids can have fun without buying the obscenely expensive light-toys that are sold at the evening shows/parades (and which I've seen moms and dads unable to get to work) Fold up hampers for clothes/laundry storage; Plastic hangers so you can hang up your wash rather than spend time/money on extra dryers They also carry many Disney themed small toys for $1--a perfect way to surprise your kids with something new every day!
i would go w/ the dollar store and use the money you save on something at disney world. also this is our first trip to disney world do you need ponchos in dec. are just the summer??
Funny story! We bought the dollar store ones prior to our trip last July. We were at DTD on our second night. It came a flood! I bet it poured for 2 or more hours. We were on one side and our adr was clear on the other side. We plunked down over $40 for 4 ponchos and an umbrella!! So now we have both!!
We also use the dollar store ponchos to keep our stroller covered and dry. I take along some clothespins and keep them with the ponchos, that way we can "secure" the poncho to the stroller. When the stroller is parked, I can pull the poncho all the way over the tray and clip it and when our son is in the stroller, we clip the poncho to the canopy.
