Dollar Rental code makes price go up!!??

Looking to book a car rental for last week in January, 2008.

For an intermediate car at Dollar rental, it is $133 base price with NO discount code.

However, if you add a discount code like KISS2 offered by Kissimmee/St.Cloud Convention bureau, the price soars to a base price of $189! That is an increase of 42%!!!

Why are discount codes making prices go up 42% at Dollar rental????

... the price of a minivan goes up $80 if you use the discount code...

A fine example of why it pays to always price things withOUT coupons so that you know whether the coupon helps or hurts. I've had coupons where I'd have to purchase a membership (AAA or even something smaller like an entertainment card) and there has been NO change in price. So why would I go through all the expense of a membership...or if I already had the membership deal with having to show it, etc for no change in price? And an increase, well, sheesh, how dumb do they think we are??? (Please don't answer that, )

Another hint....be sure that you price things out FIRST...because many sites drop a cookie on your computer so they know you've already been there. Figured this one out when I tried a few coupons just before I left for work...then tried at work without a coupon and realized it. So...always check no coupon price first....AND remember to occasionally flush your cookies and recheck.

I think that's really weird.... just shows you can't trust anybody!

I think these fall in the category of negotiated rates. The rate has been negotiated to be a certain amount - so if regular rates are higher you save, but if regular rates are lower you still pay the negotiated rate.
